PS3 bested by older brother
According to official April figures released by the NPD Group, the Playstation 3 found itself beaten out for fifth place by an unusual competitor: its predecessor, the Playstation 2.

A 50% leap in Playstation 2 sales accounts for the surprising change, an increase likely prompted by the system's price cut on April 1, a move which apparently electrified interest in the nine-year old platform.

The PS2's success was probably the only nugget of April sales news to put smiles on the faces of Sony execs. Nintendo platforms continued their lockdown of the top spots, with the Wii coming second and the DS coming both first and third, courtesy of the just-launched DSi: the DS's two hardware variations accounted for an astonishing million sales during April.Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 was down slightly over last April, but still managed a solid fourth place and remains on course for a record-breaking year.

But both the Playstation 3 and PSP posted disappointing results, with the PS3 placing sixth with its worst performance in over 18 months, and the PSP limping in seventh with a total of 116,000 sales -- down over 30% on March's numbers.

The news has revitalized persistent rumors of price cuts for Sony's PS3. The system's base model is between $150 and $200 more expensive than its competitors, the Wii and Xbox 360. Industry news site Gamasutra predicts we'll see a $100 cut in the $400 Playstation 3 announced at the E3 video games trade show in Los Angeles in early June.

So if you're contemplating taking the Playstation plunge -- and with top exclusive superhero thriller Infamous just a week away, we're betting some of you are -- you might well want to hold off and wait to see what June has in store.

1. I would be really happy if they would release the FULL version of GT5 sometime soon...
Edited on Mon May-18-09 09:29 PM by Pierre.Suave
Geez, I have played GT5 Prologue through about 25 times by now, I am ready for more. Seriously, it has been YEARS since prologue came out, what's the hold up?

That game, and the Blu-Ray player are the only reasons I bought one at all...

2. i didn't even bother with prologue...
not that i have a PS3 yet, anyways...PD has been half-assing their timetables for years now...GT4 came 2 years later than it was supposed to, and had NONE of the goodies developers promised (online play, downloadable content)

8. It really would be nice
I got my PS3 about 4 or five months ago on sale at target for a real good price. I had not really been following the releases but thought for sure GT5 would have been out. I was pretty disappointed to find out it had not been.

5. I would love to get a PS3...
but flat out refuse to shell out $400 for one. Hopefully this price drop happens, I might consider buying one. Til then, I have my trusty PS2

7. Gran Turismo is the only reason I'd buy a console

edit: oh wait, it's still 389 for the box. I'd sooner get a really sweet racing wheel and pedals kit and an F1 game for my pc

9. PS3 is awesome with tons of potential and should be around for quite a while - too expensive
for me though. At least right now. I'd blow $299 expendalbe cash on it if I could afford it - but $400 for a console system seems a bit high - no matter what the specs. That's what they get for being ahead of their time with blu-ray so early.

10. I love my PS3 and my PSP.
Pixel Junk Monsters, Savage Moon, Bad Company, Valkyria Chronicles, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Resident Evil 5, Dead Space.

The PS2 has Fatal Frame 2, some Tenchus, Devil May Cry 3, Mr. Mosquito (the hardest level in any game I have played), Resident Evil 4, and We Love Katamari, which are awesome games.

14. I still love my playstation 2
no point in paying hundreds of bucks for higher definition versions of the same games I get with the PS2.

15. It's about time Sony realizes what we already knew
The PS3 is an overpriced piece of shit. The Xbox 360 has the 95% of the same games and is a grip cheaper. Even yesterdays processors rebundled (read: the Wii) are kicking the shit out of it. Sony shot it's load too early and brought a platform to the forefront no one was asking for. Keep your overpriced Blu ray player and hard drive. I'll play the other two systems that don't suck.
