The torch has been passed. The Trek universe is renewed.
The franchise is secure.

Not a bad little romp, all in all.

Just one small thing- someone PLEASE tell me they haven't turned Pavel Chekov into Wesley Crusher. PLEASE. My kingdom for an ill-fitting Beatles wig...

1. The movie was fine. (SPOILER) as long as you can accept the premise
that traveling back in time can and WILL affect the time line in innumerable and unpredictable ways (which is a classic sci-fi tenant BTW) then anything goes so just sit back and enjoy the ride (I'm looking at YOU DejaQ...)

2. If nothing else it's a great way to (possible spoilers)
wipe out the entire Trek history, thus leaving a gigantic blank book to begin filling all over again with new races, new plots, new characters, new ideas, etc. IOW, the Cosmic Reset Button has been pushed and the last forty years never happened...

14. Justice will be served when Abrams is done with rebooting
(or is that a boot to the head?) and someone takes ST back in time to before this movie timeline happened and royally screws it all up for the latest batch of fans :P

I can see a theme fomenting in Hollywood suits' minds already...movie bombs...go back in time...hit reset!

9. Most of the die-hard Trekkies I know...
...LOVED it. Myself included. Which is the mark of a great Star Trek film, when it can be enjoyed thoroughly by fans and non-fans alike.

12. Oh, there are a few who are vocal, even here.
But it doesn't seem like anything close to the majority. Just a few who make lots of noise, and so seem more numerous than they are.

17. Gotta poke that factoid bubble thar
;)

I'm not a die-hard trekkie. Never been to a convention, don't memorize show episode numbers and titles, usually can't name every character on a show until I've been watching it for a few years, don't care who did the music (other than Christopher Franke and Evan Chen of B5 and Crusade :P) and don't follow the careers of the actors. I just like good science fiction, some action, and good characterization. What I received with this "movie" was action, Action and more ACTION and not a lot of anything else. Then again, as I knew what Abrams has always been like (let's kill off as many people as we can in the most imaginative and gruesome ways!) I wasn't expecting anything but that. Had his name and influence not been anywhere near this production, I would have given it a better chance. I know I'm also in the minority for disliking Abrams, so there's that.

Hollywood also abhors good science fiction for the most part. I can only think of two hard-core science fiction films that came out of Hollywood in the last couple of decades: Contact and the remake of Solaris. But those aren't blockbuster movies.

I love good science fiction shows like Babylon 5 and Stargate (SG1 and Atlantis) as even with all the shoot-em up and blow-em up plots, there's still room for discovery and good problem solving, not to mention really good villains. Nero just wasn't much of a villain. He would not have survived against even one Shadow vessel. The movie was just weak all the way around. Turn off your mind, consume and don't bother discussing deep thoughts after it's over.

15. I'm kind of Trekkish--loved it.
http://vixenstrangelymakesuncommonsense.blogspot.com/2009/05/star-trek-what-was-i-saying-about.html

Pavel Chekov's "wubble-you's" are golden, and his hair is natural, not Beatle-wigged. Even the Romulans don't have Beatle-wigs. Vulcans still have bowl-cuts, but what're you gonna do?

I thought that casting was great, the effects were fierce, and the story was worthy of the franchise. I wanna see it again, already.

16. Trekkie Poseur Here... :D
I really liked it although I had a hard time squaring it with what I knew from the previous movies and series! As stated earlier, we're starting from ground zero...it would be cool if they started a whole new tv series with this bunch.
