My new rescue doggie...(pic) Elation and sorrow (sorry, long)
I've been pining away for my best girl for a very long time. I missed out on my first choice as there was another family ahead of me, but the woman at the shelter told me to go in yesterday as they had two new doggies, both surrendered Thursday night, brother and sister. I went in with my son, he had his rescue dog, Bam, in the car just in case they could meet.
My new friend had to be:
1) rescue
2) female
3) large.

When I got there, I met my friend after being told: The family had to surrender the siblings as their house was being foreclosed. The woman at the shelter told me that the family and the dogs were all crying when they were left there. The two dogs, two years old, are so tightly bonded, and both were nervous and freaked out. They couldn't pen them together as were not spayed/neutered. It was obvious that these doggies were in fear and confusion....pain. I could only think of the pain the family was going through......So very sad.

My son had to walk her as she was too hard on the leash, she was out of it....The shelter woman said they would calm down in a few days....My son was heartbroken, he wanted to take her brother, but already has a male dog. She even refused a doggie treat...she's in living hell.

I know that Bam, her new step-brother, will bring her joy....she'll be in a home with another dog, although my son lives in separate living quarters....the apartment over the garage. They'll share the back yard...my son is getting a huge fence that will allow them to romp and play....the fence is really huge! I have a large yard and there's acres of woods in the back...

The joy of finally getting my best forever friend is overshadowed by the pain of her family....another family suffering because of the economy. I wish I could tell them that I'll love her forever...she'll be my life....and I hope that they will all be okay though these difficult times....

After I left the shelter....I quickly drove back just before they closed to take her picture. I didn't go in her pen as they were about to lock up, and they had been so wonderful to me I didn't want to be an annoyance...
Here's my girl...I wish I could have just the joy....I wish I didn't know the sad story of the family that had to give her up...
Please keep this family in your prayers....I'm going to see if there's a way I can give the shelter a letter to the family to let them know that I will love her as they did....I'm babbling...sorry, teary. I will be visiting her daily until she can come home after her surgery. I'm certain it will happen this week....
Tomorrow I'll take a picture of her when I bring her out in the yard....I want to see her smile.

Here's my girl...I hope to name her Maeve:

peace~

2. And thank you....
LeftyMom:hug:
It took me over twelve years to finally be able to open my heart to another girl. I almost feel selfish, as I could have cared for one, but my grieving for my last friend lasted far too long.
I guess we know when we're ready....and I am.
In the 'old days' we could just look in the paper, and find litters being given away...
Now there are too many animals that are in cages and pens...breaks my heart.
I know I'll be thinking of her family forever...and her papers said she has a wonderful disposition, is playful and friendly....She just needs love, and I know her love for me will be unconditional.

Thank you, sweetie...

peace~

3. She looks like a dear doggie, and probably really smart, like Biden's pup, ;)
Edited on Sun May-17-09 01:00 PM by marzipanni
being mostly German Shepherd . I think it's great that you are able to bring her into your life, but indeed it is so sad that her original human family had to relinquish her and her brother.
I wonder how many people have had to move out of foreclosed houses, and then their animals have been killed at pounds, because of the way people were tantalized into the American dream of home ownership by greedy financial institutions. And now houses that could have continued to be lived in sit there deteriorating- how f***ed up is that?
Have fun with Maeve, I'm sure your son's doggy-boy will help her adjust to her new home.

10. marzipanni!
Thank you so much for the happy doggie celebration balloon!
Yes, the German Shepard shines through, and she's also part Golden Retriever...the same combination as my last girl except Maxi looked like her mother...the retriever.
Sadly, it's my understanding that the shelters are filling up faster because of all the foreclosures. I never thought I'd walk into that situation...it breaks my heart.
The two girls I met prior to her were happy, tail-wagging 'please take me home' types...She was just too new and traumatized to be herself....Yes, we'll adjust and have fun...thank you!
And Bam will have a blast! I told him all about the best girl, so they'll meet before she comes home :-)

Thank you so very much, WillBowden:hug:
I don't know that I deserve your kind and beautiful words...
But my heart has room for my girl....
She will be loved, and all I want is for her to be happy with her new life.
Our animal friends ask for so little...and give so much more in return.

Thank you for being you...

Thank you, libodem
It truly is bittersweet, and I hope that she's feeling a tad more secure when I see her tomorrow. I'll take her out in the yard without the leash, and see how she does....We'll have more time together. I know she was happy and playful until her family had to give her up....she'll be okay...
She does look very smart...and she's beautiful.
We'll find joy together....I can only hope that her family will be okay...They are a part of me now.
Thank you for your kind words..

15. such a sad yet heartwarming story.
You and Maeve will have wonderful times together. She's very lucky, and I suspect you'll say you're lucky too. You have such a kind heart full of love.

Your story made me tear up a lot. We're considering another dog. It's been almost 2 years since we lost our Rottie to bone cancer at 6 years old. I'm just not sure.

 for you and your new companion.
You and your son a good folks.

21. Dearest auntAgonist...
Thank you for your kind words...
I understand what you're going through....You will know when the time is right for you....I'm so sorry for your loss. I could not consider another girl for over twelve years. It's too late to regret that decision, but it was based on my feelings....The loss was so painful, she passed away in my arms. After over ten years of love and devotion, my daughter and I had to hold Maxi in our arms as the vet put her to rest.

I remember the joy of doggie sitting for my sister in the summer...a huge Rottie, a gentle soul. This was after my girl was gone...they are beautiful dogs...And recently watching my oldest son's pit bull while he was on vacation. Another gentle soul who insisted on sleeping with me, the only dog I've ever slept with.

I could see my son trying not to tear up when he was speaking with her big brother...He really wanted to just take him, but couldn't.

Thank you so much for the hug...I will pass it on to Maeve tomorrow...
Be well....the time will come when you know for certain that your doggie friend is awaiting you...

peace~

I think she's beautiful, too!
I'm certain that she'll be spayed this week...and I'll have her by the weekend.
Yes, she has lots of love to give...I'm just sorry that she's gone through the trauma of separation from love and family....and I can't stop thinking about her family.
I want her transition to go smoothly....I think it will be raining tomorrow so I'll be sitting on the floor of her pen with her....and we'll talk. Also, if she's not seeing the vet on Tuesday, I'm bringing my grandson to hang out with her....

She'll be smiling soon....

22. Pretty dog. I'm glad you're getting a shelter dog.
Question: How do you pronounce the name? Is it pronounced like it rhymes with "Dave" or "wave"?

24. I'm so glad you asked!
Arugula Latte:hug:
Yes, that's how the name is pronounced.
I heard that name a few years ago...
My supervisor named her baby girl Maeve. I had never heard the name, and thought it was beautiful. She told me it was an old Irish name.
I remember when Maeve toddled into my classroom, room full of preschool toys, and I saw her face light up.
"OOOOOOOOOh.....books!" She went to the bookshelf and was in heaven. She didn't care about the toys...
So now I have my own Maeve!

25. Most German Shepherds totally shut down in shelters
so I'm sure she'll be a different critter soon. I have two 1/2-GSD mixes (unrelated, though I'm often asked if they're brothers) - welcome (back?) to the club.

You just need to find a friend to adopt her other buddy!

26. Thank you for the information...
and the welcome back to the club
This was my first time in a shelter...and it was so very sad. She and her brother were the only ones freaking out, as in...a lot of barking and pacing. The others were just happy to see us...I hope someone takes her brother soon. I'm sure he'll find a home....he's beautiful. I'm going to tell everyone I see about him...
It's sad that they'll have to be separated....

I grew up with a German Shepard mix...we got him when I was about five years old, and had him for fifteen years. He was part Collie...They are wonderful dogs...of course, every dog is wonderful, but these are the dogs that I've known and loved.

I'll be checking in at the shelter to keep tabs on her brother...
Give your boys a hug from me!
