Good morning Lounge
How are you today? How was your weekend? I went on a shopping spree Saturday with a friend. Bought two new pairs of pants :bounce: and a pair of black shoes (without heels - thanks to my foot :eyes: ). Sunday I just relaxed.
My vacation next week is cancelled. My great uncle has pneumonia, so they aren't coming. I will take a day off Friday next week and Thursday next week is a holiday in Germany.

Picture of the Day (my dad's parents on their wedding day in the early 1940s, during the war as you can see)

3. Hi Miss H
Your grandparents are very striking in that photo. Are they still around? I hope so.

I had a nice weekend. I've got my new computer all squared away. Had to buy a new printer as well. Vista chewed up and spit out my old one. I ended up giving it away to someone with an XP machine. Just bought new cartridges for the damn thing, too. I've got my new TV installed. The cable guy is coming by tomorrow to hook me up with the rest of the world.

I posted some pics of myself here in the lounge last weekend illustrating my weight loss. You can view them here ----> http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=8759675&mesg_id=8759675

You are looking great!! CONGRATS!!!!

I need to find a way to lose weight as well. I'm weighting 187 lbs. Way too much for me. I need to lose 45 lbs. But it is really hard because I hate sports and love to eat. :eyes:

Forgot to say. Both my grandfathers died already, this one at the age of 69 in 1988. My grandmothers are still alive, this one is not doing too well though, she is turning 89 this year. She is living in a nursing home. My other grandma - the one who was supposed to come for a visit next week - is turning 84 this year and is doing great. Still living by herself, taking care of herself.

It's good to hear that you still have your granmothers. I have one grandparent left- my grandma on my mom's side. She is 85. She just had to have surgery on her back and the recovery is going to take a while, so we are helping her get around right now. She's still very sharp, nothing wrong with her mind at all and she was living independently up until the surgery. We'll get her back in shape.

Great picture that got my attention; was looking at the medals, and your grandfather has the Infantry Assault Badge (the one with the rifle,) as well as a Wound Badge, and it looks like they're both in silver, so he had to be wounded in action for at least 3 times ... Can't see his rank, though.

Honestly, I don't know much about my grandfather's experience at war. Only a story when he got captured by the Soviet Army. He was hiding his watch in his shoes. I don't know anything about his rank, but I believe he was only a private.

The picture of your grandparents is great. I don't think I've got any old pictures downloaded. You have inspired me.

Sorry to hear that your Uncle is feeling poorly. Hope he feels better soon and that the visit will take place soon.

My weekend was good. I made the shrimp and orzo recipe that I spoke about on Friday. It's super yummy. First time I made it, and it's a keeper. Also baked some French bread, so lunch was fabulous.

Yesterday I made a Hearts of Palm and Artichoke Salad to take to a friends. Everyone brought a dish to pass. I haven't made this salad in a long time and so I thought it was a good time to make it and share with friends.

Both dishes look very yummy!!! I had nothing fancy to eat over the weekend. Saturday I made me a "Taco-Salad" (lettuce, tomatoes, hamburger meat with taco seasoning, cheese, sour cream). I like the taste but am not a big fan of the mess tacos make.

I also like your flower arrangement on the table :D

I love fresh cut flowers. I arranged a big luncheon at work last week, and decided to take one of the centerpieces. My department paid for them, so I may as well enjoy one. ;)

Tacos are great, but I agree with you. They can be messy.

31. Definitely a good plan.
There's a tavern in the area that has a taco bar during happy hour. Once in a while there's a few of us who get together there to catch up etc. We too eat the tacos as a salad. Less messy and easier to chat.

Unfortunately I've got to head out to work now.

Wishing you a great day.

21. Good morning, Miss Honeychurch!
Yesterday was "Mother's day", but my family is celebrating it today
because my sister couldn't get off work yesterday.

Today is her day off, and I was able to trade today for Thursday
with the other manager at my job, so today is "mothers day"
for me. I'm heading up to Mom's area in a few minutes, and
my sis and I are going to treat her to lunch
and then spend the day "antiqueing" with her.

Actually, my Sister is also a MOM, so I plan
to pick up the entire check for lunch.
(Sis raised 3 kids on her own, and did a great job-
they're pretty awesome kids. I got her a card.)

But once we hit the antique stores, she's on her own!

BTW, that's a great picture. Thanks for sharing it with us.

CSI: New York just had a show about a Nazi hiding as a Jew for years in New York. They always put a disclaimer saying it is fiction, but it sounded a lot like this guy's story to me (he's claiming that he was a prisoner, not a Nazi)

Shows like that take the ideas from real life. I read too that he was pretending to be a prisoner. I don't know if he is guilty but I believe Germany wouldn't ask for him if he were.

that was really surprising to me when I first came to the U.S. And also during my internship. Almost no news whatsoever about the world.
Here in Germany the news are talking about what happens in the world. It begins with the topic of the day, then international news, then German news, then business, then sport, then the weather. In 15 minutes. And later on in the evening they talk more specific about the topics.

I generally read the BBC news just to keep up, but I've been bad about it recently. It used to be different, but now even the newspapers don't cover international news unless something huge happens (that affects the US).

but it kinda shows that the U.S. is always only about the U.S. Nothing else matters.

For example. The pirates. There are news almost daily that ships get captured. But the only time the U.S. did something was when an American ship got captured. Makes me wonder.

at the same time, if the U.S. stepped in when it wasn't an American ship, it could cause a huge international incident. We are kind of over-extended militarily because of Bush, we can't handle too much more.

On the other hand, I just started hearing about pirates maybe 3 months ago. I have no idea if this is a new problem or if it's an old problem that we are just now hearing about.

38. sorry you won't go on vacation...
yesterday here in the U.S. it was Mother's Day (took my mom and a friend out to dinner)...Is that something celebrated in Germany at all? I know its an American quasi-holiday, but some people in other countries do adopt them...

41. Good morning Blue_Tires
:hi:

Yes, we had Mother's Day as well. It isn't as big as in the U.S. But the stores try to make it a deal to sell stuff. Like Valentine's Day and Halloween.
We don't celebrate it in our family.

and yes, it is as good as everyone has been saying...first time in my life I paid $10 for a movie and feel like I got my money's worth...

I'm glad both of your grandparents survived the war -- You might not be here otherwise!

48. I won't see the movie
not a Star Trek fan.

Yes, I am glad all my grandparents survived. My dad was born in 1946 and my mom in 1950. I even was so fortunate to meet my great grandmother. She was born in 1898 and was 95 years old when she died. All females in my family reached a high age, so my chances that I will too are pretty good.

55. G'day, MissH
:hi:

Had a good time at the renfaire, in spite of the rain. Fortunately, the rain was spotty and wasn't steady. I was bribing the fairies to keep the rain away. :P

70. I don't know yet
but it will be a long time, compounded by the fact that my dad is not in great health and he doesn't tolerate pain well. My guess is 4-6 months. :(

81. Good morning
The weekend was a nice break from 11 days of rain. It is raining again though. If it would just warm up by about 10 degrees I'd wear a bathing suit as I did my daily stuff and ignore the rain til it went away :)

Hope your uncle gets better soon.
