I believe 9/11 inspired the song. Many people were lonely, scared, sad and angry. They did not know who to look to or who to run to for comfort. Especially those who lost someone close during that horrible day.

I think it also means something on a more personal level. Many of us out there are lonely. We don't have very many friends that we talk to on a regular basis. We go through life feeling isolated. This song definitely expresses the feeling, the pain of isolation from the world. Especially the feeling that you have nothing to look forward to and all you can do is hope that things will be better but you are just not sure. This is a great song. The Boss has written many great songs, especially on "Born to Run". But this one almost reduces me to tears when I hear it. It evokes a lot of emotion.
