5. "Sugar Magnolia" (studio version), almost any "Dark Star" or "Sugaree,"
any of those early-period "St. Stephen/The Eleven" jams (e.g. 'Live/Dead' or one of the Fillmore bootlegs), "The Other One/Cryptical Envelopment/The Other One" from 'Fillmore East 2-11-69' (I think that's the one - great set(s) all around with nice Pigpen takes on "Hey Jude" and "I'm A King Bee"). But really, just about any Dead is good Dead... :)

And the 45-minute rendition from Woodstock is just hilarious in its sheer excess.

29. I like the earlier psychedelic Dead
Like their first three albums, plus stuff on "Vintage Dead" like the original "Dancing In The Streets" or "I Know You Rider" when they used a farfisa organ...I just like the sound of music from that era, 1965-69. That said, I also love "American Beauty" because of the songs, not jams. I liked them live when they would segue from "Sugar Magnolia" into "Fire On the Mountain", which I've talked about before. I saw them live like six times, and enjoyed the shows more for the camaraderie of friends and fellow attendees more than their music, per se.

47. But seriously....
1) Jack Straw...Loved the eighties versions where bobby is just dropping those chords.

2) China/Rider...1970's with UJB style jam in the transition. Some of the 80's stuff is great too, one thing I did not like is when tehy moved this one into the second set.

3) Scarlet/Fire transitions...3-31-84. Stupendeous

4) Great Estimated Prophet jams....The one that played the other night with Branford marsalis(with a Milestones segue) was pretty sweet. There is a incredible one from Long Beach 82 that is really good.

5) Jam out of He's Gone...Oct 74 Winterland and 3-31-84. Totally psychedeilic vocal thing.

6) Morning Dew -5-08-77 (and you know this). Also i love the one that they played to open the second set with at the Greek in 84(?0> Right before they came onstage I yelled "walk me Out Jerry"...and the one and only time, they opened the second set with it.

Dark Star 10-31-91 for Bll Graham with ken Kesey reciting the ee cummings poem "Buffalo Bill is defunct".

50. Benny...
It is so strange...as I get older...I yearn for the dead I grew up on in the early 70's.

I could talk to you forever about this.

You are old enough to know what I am talking about.

To me, the mystique left in the early 80's.

In the 70's, they were THE SHIT.

If you were a deadhead then, YOU UNDERSTOOD. YOU FELT IT. It was almost like a cowboy, tight jean type of thing,,,with a mystique. Do you know what I mean?

The thin Jerry...up until about '79...then he fucked himself up, and I would try to feel it...but it was not the same.

MIDI helped in the 90's...but it was different for me.
