Any video editing gurus here?

I'm trying to find the best way or software to get the raw footage of my son (on AVI), but everybody from Facebook to Tinypic are rejecting it as too big, it's only under 10 min video and at 1.01 gig (estimated size) but I'm having trouble trying to get it to compress to the right codec (H.252 I think)..

what's the best video editing software (free and otherwise) to use it for a nimrod like myself (good at tech stuff, but not good at anything video-related)
