Meeting on the Turret Stairs

“Lie down beside me,” I whispered.
So we lay on the bed
in that room that was the whole world to us.
Outside, the innkeeper’s children
kicked a soccer ball along the quay.
Seagulls flocked and dispersed,
and the busy foolish world went about its foolish business.

I shut my eyes and
we met on turret stairs.
I felt the braid of your hair
brush my cheek like a glance.
In the distance someone was blowing a horn.
Voices, and boots hurrying across the boards overhead
as the tower awoke by torchlight.
I had drawn my sword.

I opened my eyes then and saw
you watching me from the pillow,
your agate eyes two demi-lunettes.
Horses neighed in the place I was coming out of,
and stamped their iron-shod hooves
on the stones of the stable yard below,
striking sparks like the flinty stars.
A banner snapped in the sharp breeze
as dawn blazed through.
I could smell a river close-by,
your body opening to my hands.
