Redding Trader Joe's to open Friday
Friday's grand opening of Trader Joe's in Redding will be as much a celebration of the store's arrival as it will be a tribute to Tracy Conry's late grandmother — Roberta "Bobbi" Shuler.

For years, Shuler, a Shingletown resident, lobbied the specialty grocer to open a store in Redding. Every time she visited a Trader Joe's, she would complain and plead that Redding needed a store.

Shuler died of cancer in August 2007 at age 88, one month after Trader Joe's announced it was coming to Redding.

Before she died, Conry, an Anderson resident, promised her grandmother that she would stand in her place and be the first customer through the door.

"We decided to one-up that and have her cut the ribbon — or cut the lei, I should say," Redding Trader Joe's commander (store manager) Tom Mueth said Tuesday.

1. They cut a lei at their store openings?
Ironic, since they have repeatedly said they aren't interested in opening one out here. :eyes:

2. We got one about a year ago
And it's nice to see a store give Krogers a run for their money. But do the employees have to be so damn cheerful all the time? They carry some interesting and affordable products. And their beer and wine selection is pretty goo except for the 3 buck upchuck!

3. I'll probably have to make a point of stopping there...
...whenever I go over the mountain. I wouldn't mind seeing one out here, too, so I wouldn't have to drive six hours to visit one. That would certainly be better than most other big box stores!

6. More info on this please..
We have one at the end of our street. The staff seems to have low turnover, and is always cheery and helpful, not something you'd think you would find in a system that is abusive.

11. I LURVE me some Trader Joe's, but why is it they always drop every product I become addicted to???
I can think of several without even trying:

Their strawberry-flavored soy milk that tasted just like Quik when it was ice cold.
Their vegetarian pot pies (not to mention the chicken and turkey ones as well).
Their house brand veggie burger patties were HUGE and had an incredible taste and meaty texture!

And I know there are a few others throughout the years that I miss something fierce.
