1. Meself, I like Firefox.
I'm far, far from a computer geek, but I think most will agree about IE's suckage. :hi:

2. Firefox - no question about it.
And while you are at it, install ThunderBird for your e-mail.

6. Firefox, if only for the add-ons available.
Adblock among the most important of those.

The other browsers like opera and Chrome are good, but lack the expandability of Firefox.

The first in tabbed-browsing (for years!!!), what everyone else copied and claimed as their own later ;)

12. I put up with IE until about 6 mos. ago.
It would never close quickly, properly, or sometimes at all. I got fed up and switched to Firefox. Problem gone.

The only thing I miss about IE was the ability to open the "favorites" and then open multiple tabs while keeping the "favorites" window open. In firefox it closes after each choice. Annoying, and tedious.

25. Netscape is officially dead as a browser
AOL killed it off a year or so ago. It has officially been replaced by Firefox.

27. That reminds me--I need to upload more content to my Geocities page

I think the last version of Netscape I used was like 4.1.1 or something.

I never really had a problem with it, but I wasn't so devoted to it that I couldn't make the switch when something more handy came along.

28. Better do it quick-- Yahoo's pulling the plug on GeoCities!
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geocities/geocities-05.html

Netscape 4.x was a nightmare. It didn't follow standards, it was bloated, it was slow, and it crashed hard, regularly, on nearly every platform. There was a very good reason the Mozilla Foundation chucked the code and started over for the Mozilla/Firefox browsers.

IE 4 was a very good browser, IE 5 was a great browser, and even IE 6 was still pretty good. I've got IE 7 on my work machine, and it's alright, but not nearly as good as Firefox 3. I do my development work on IE mostly (MS shop), but at home I use Firefox and Opera because they're my favorites. :)

17. Opera. Firefox is OK, but you have to get...
extensions for all the stuff that's already built into Opera. And, Opera is a little friendlier in its tabbing, bookmarks, and history. Little things like the personal bar, the Wand, and being able to use keyboard shortcuts are very handy.

Opera also has pretty good email and newsgroup clients built in.

http://www.opera.com/download/

Yeah, I do use Firefox, Chrome, and even Safari at times. They all have their uses. Some secure sites don't recognize anything but Firefox and IE, some sites have horrendous coding that Opera doesn't recognize, but Chrome does...

18. I work for an ISP and have come to the same conclusion.
The general public uses Internet Explorer more than any other browser. Its my job to make sure that our users can get at least one computer in the home connected to high speed internet and able to browse. We follow a pretty comprehensive flowlist. On those times that I get all the way through it and nothing works, its because of Internet Explorer. Often the person can still send and receive email through Outlook or another client program... so we know the internet connection is working just fine. I'm not sure if its a virus problem or the program (IE) just becomes corrupt on its own.

20. Try 4 more... Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Google Chrome.
Have all 4 on your computer. Find one you like. Shop around.

I use Firefox because it's the #2 browser and it's the browser that is next best supported. Opera is good enough, so is Safari. I like the idea of Chrome but last I used of it I observed some bugs with its Flash implementation, so I stopped using it. It may have improved by now.

Mark.

23. This Webmaster of 12+ years says OPERA
I've been building/designing/running/destroying web sites for a living since 1997, and IMHO Opera is the best browser there is, followed closely by Firefox.

Opera is lightweight, has many cool features, and does the best job of following W3C standards. I've used it for ten years now (since 3.x), and it is the best there is.

So far, so good. If this doesn't work out for me, I'll give Opera a try.

Thanks for the input!

26. Good choice!
Firefox is a great browser (I'm using it right now, in fact!). Once you get it set up, get some plug-ins and customize it. Adblockers are particularly useful and make surfing much easier.

My favorite useless plug-in is called "Stop! Hammertime". It replaces your stop button with a graphic of M.C. Hammer, and replaces the default stop sound with a sample of Hammer saying "Stop! Hammertime.". Completely useless but fun to have around, especially if you're surrounded by uptight coworkers.
