Does ANYBODY still exercise to a Walkman cassette player?
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 07:45 PM by Mike 03
When MiniDisc first was released, way back in the mid 90s, I started collecting favorite cassettes and sturdy portable Walkmans because I figured they were an endangered species. So I horded Nirvana, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins, Springsteen, Stones, Costello tapes...

I was half right and half wrong: MiniDisc was a flop, but we did get better portable CD players and now of course the IPod.

The problem with running with a CD player is that if you want to listen to a variety of songs, you have to switch CDs and you can't really carry around CDs in your sweatpants the way you can carry cassette tapes.

I can't let go of the cassette tape.

Does anybody still use the Walkman, or run to cassette tapes?

Why am I having such a hard time moving onto the 21st century. I don't even have a clue how you move a song that you love onto a little machine you strap to your wrist.

It boggles the mind...

Another question is: Some of my unopened Walkmans are verging on 18 years old now. Do you think they will even still work? I know some of the parts in a Walkman are bands made of rubber, and I'm afraid to even check to see if these things work after all these years.

1. I have a box of excellent tapes circa 1993. I'd like to import them into my computer
I dont have the means to play them, but the collection is very decent. I had to fight to get them back from two psycho ex-girlfriends back in highschool. I have a ton of SubPop groups on tape as well as others who havent seen the light of day since the early 1990's

2. Oh SubPop tapes, that is fantastic...
Your collection sounds great, and I hope you can find some way to transfer them.

I know some albums have never made that leap from cassette to CD, let alone the internet.

One of my interests is soundtracks, and a few amazing soundtracks from the late 80s and 90s have never been remastered onto CD or any other format.

3. I copied a couple of tapes to MP3
But mostly been copying the old vinyl to MP3. Then burn a cd, and load them into SD chips for the Sandisk player.

Tedious process.

But there's something nice about starting up an mp3 file through the earbuds, and hearing the sound of the needle finding the groove before an old Stones tune kicks in.

:hi:

7. I still use mine.
I have several hundred audio cassettes to copy over.

It is stuff I taped years ago.
