15. Cashews are NOT a nut!!! The Caschew is a seed.

It grows on the end of an apple-like fruit that is too soft for transport (which is why you have never seen one in a store). We TREAT cashews as nuts, but they are seeds.

And PEANUTS aren't nuts either - they are legumes. They're also fun to grow! They are beautiful bushy plants that put down hundreds of red tendrils that bury themselves in the soil and the peanuts develop underground. Great project for kids! I grew them in New Hampshire, so don't worry about climate too much - just get the right variety (try Johnny's Selected Seeds in Maine).
