New Habitat For My Red Ear Slider Turtles
First let me begin with a disclaimer: I don't recommend that anyone keep exotic pets like turtles. Having said that, my turtles are rescued. Literally, they were put in a bucket by a dumpster. They have now lived with me for two years and they have grown each year. Fortunately, I have a walled back garden that allows them to roam on land in addition to their aquatic home. As they are getting bigger, I had to add another pool.

They love their new pool!

1. Lovely garden... glad they're enjoying it.
:)

But why do you recommend against having turtles as pets?

I love turtles and have always wanted to care for some, someday.

5. They are surprisingly interesting pets... one of the turtles will come, scracth on the sliding door
to be let in... He will come in, walk around, and then scratch to be let out a bit later!

I think wild animals in general should probably not be pets. However, I like these guys.

2. I rescued one from the parking lot ar my apartment complex last year.
There is a storm ditch (actually it's pretty big with cattails growing and animals living in there) across the road from me and I thought that was where he came from so I put him back there.

He was huge for a slider.

9. "Turkle" -- a cross between a turkey and a turtle?
:P

10. Heh. No, it's what Mrs. V. calls a turtle.
:) Turkle. She's cute like that.

Effint.
Garraffiter.
Rhinoceropoop.
Agliator.
Crocodiliac.

I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them right now. She's silly.

7. Aw, I luvs the turties!

I had those little ones that they gave away as prizes at traveling carnivals when I was a kid. I understand now what a bad idea that was (them as prizes, and me as sole keeper), but I sure loved them as a kid, and I still do.

Good on you for saving those beasties. Keep us updated.

Wow, that is cool. How big do these types of turtles get?

Thanks for sharing.

12. I once rescued a turtle, by returning it to a nearby channel
Looking back, however, I'm desperately afraid that it may actually have been a tortoise... :(

That looks like a nice hang-out for your little fellas!

14. Cool!
A friend of my mom's wanted some turtles for her pond, and she went to the Chinese grocery.

She got four turtles.

The woman there said "Not enough for soup!"

My mom's colleague put the turtles in the back yard. They promptly vanished.

A year later, a MONSTER turtle came crawling out of the undergrowth.

Good times.
