Oh crap! My drivers license expired. Is there a grace period for that?

1. If you get caught driving, the fine is kinda pricey. But to renew it when

it is late, at least in my state, the fine is $1.00. No grace period.

2. I am sure it depends on where you live.

In Iowa I am pretty sure it can be renewed 30 days before or after your birthday.
After that i think you need to take at least the written test over. Possibly both written and driving.
Not sure what it will do to your insurance if you let it expire, though. I surely wouldn't want to get in an accident with an expired license.

3. In Texas you get a card in the mail and in some cases don't need to go in.

It is no big deal here to let one's license expire, I did that once.

In Virginia, you have to have a certified copy or the original of your birth certificate with you to renew if you let it expire. No grace period for that here.

The DMV is not going to give you a ticket but the police will if they stop you.

Years ago, I forgot to renew mine and was sent a postcard stating that if I didn't get mine renewed within 10 days, there would be a warrant out for my arrest. :wtf: Had no fine, though.

Look for cops, pull into a parking lot quick if you see one behind you. Don't pass speed traps if possible. Get to the RMV quick and pay your fines, it's your cheapest option.

The court system for traffic violations is really nothing more than a money filter for the town anyway. The only time I was ever in court for anything, was traffic stuff. I was nailed for no insurance, suspended license, and something else which I forgot. The fine was less than what I had to pay to get my car out of the impound lot. The cop who booked me was all about "Dude, I just ruined your day", and I was like "How's that", and he read off all the charges, but I ripped a huge fart in my car just before I got out, and his buddy dove in headfirst to look for contraband and got a mouthful. The look on his face once he pulled back was worth the fine :evilgrin:

technically and legally no institutions will recognize it (the bank, the liquor store, etc)

you can go to jail for driving with an expired license (it's happened to a couple people i know in texas, not sure about your state)

in college. so i mailed the renewal and they told me once they got it it was renewed even if i didn't get it back from them yet.

They did have me take off my glasses for the picture. Must be that homeland security thing someone mentioned up thread.

You can find it at www.state.__.us (replace the underlines with your two-letter state code). There should be a link to your state's DMV and/or Dept of Public Safety. You should be able to find the rules for renewal there. Good luck!
