The only reason I could see for them dropping it was petulant anti-Americanism, similar to that which led to the overhaul of amateur boxing to blatantly undermine more powerful American fighters in favor of the "hunt 'n' peck" style. And as both World Baseball Classics have demonstrated, the U.S. can't seem to cut it in international play.

The French engineered the dropping of baseball, ostensibly because it didn't have enough international appeal (as opposed to synchronized swimming, curling, and biathlon). In other words, "Europeans suck at it, so fuck you, Yankee swine".

What they really did was rob Cuba of a gold medal...
