Do you collect anything?
I collect vinyl records. I try to sniff out 60's original mono mixes. They're just better than the CD remasters.

12. Vinyl is superior. CDs sound flat & tinny. Usually the CD mixes suck too.
Edited on Wed Apr-08-09 12:54 AM by Dr Fate
I've heard very few CDS that retain the original sound that you hear on the record- the "re-mastering" and all the fucking with the mixes are never as great as the original...

I don't know what you mean by noise & muddy stereo channels- unless you are talking about records that are dirty or poorly cared for...If you take care of your records, there is no problem with noise.

19. I'm talking about inferior technology.
Vinyl has a low signal-to-noise ratio. CDs have a high signal-to-noise ratio. That means that with vinyl, a greater amount of the audio signal is lost to background noise compared to CDs. Silence on vinyl is far less silent than on CD and the audio quality of the recorded instruments/voices is much cleaner on CD because there is far less noise present.

With vinyl, the left and right channels bleed through to the other. What you're hearing when you play a record is not what was mixed, but an approximation.

I have about a dozen LPs in excellent condition and all of them have a noticeably lower sound quality than their CD reissues, especially when any of the reissues are 20 or 24 bit remasters.

28. I agree vinyl has a lower signal to noise ration
But CD's lack the ability to resonate. It's really an argument over preferance.

49. And I'm talking about the music that comes out of my speakers.
Edited on Wed Apr-08-09 12:53 PM by Dr Fate
We have to agree to disagree on comparing CD reissues to LP- I've never heard a reissue that is better- my conclusion after comparison is the opposite of yours.

The re-mixes or re-masterings are never the same- and never as good to me.

Also, I'm not listening to the "silence" on a Muddy Waters record, for instance- I'm listening to the vocals, harp, guitars, etc.

It comes down to what sounds good to your ears, I guess.

The good news is we both are passionate about music- that can only be a good thing.

like a series of individual instruments rather than a blended symphony orchestra. It's too 'clean'.

50. When they "clean" parts of the music, they apparently end up erasing part of the sound.
Becuase I can hear nuances in the vocals, pianos, etc that I never hear on the CDs- they just are not there.

George is right.

9. I collected records
I sold most of them after I lost my job, made a few thousand bucks! I still have a few, about 400, mainly early punk/obscure bands on tiny labels you will never find on cd, plus lots of older 50s era "incredibly strange music"...

I also collected comic books, I kept until the last moment a really nice Silver Age collection...probably made about Ten thousand dollars seeling them, all told...

Older comic book demand is incredible! Considering I love music much more, I was however always loath to pay more than 25$ for a single album. Yet I've bought and sold comic books originally priced at 10 or 12 cents originally for over a hundred dollars each. And it happens all the time!

I don't regret selling my stuff, after all being unemployed for almost a year and a half one needs to live on something!

I still have a ton of books, though, and action figures! Maybe someday I'll sell them on ebay...probably right before I die so I won't miss them that much...

27. I collect shit no one else cares about
Records: 60s Jamaican Ska/Rocksteady/Reggae, Motown, Stax, 2 Tone (The Specials, English Beat, Madness, The Selecter, Bad Manners, etc), 50s Jazz, and, of course, anything Oingo Boingo.

Vehicles: Anything old. I currently have a 1962 Falcon with a straight six 170 and a 1968 Vespa Super Sport (laugh all you want, it's worth more than most Harley's).

Trombones: Well, I used to, but right now I only have an early 20th Century Holton peashooter and an early 80s Yamaha pro series (my everyday playing horn). I'd like to get a Supersonic King 2B or an Olds Super Fullerton for gigging and recording.

Alcohol: I'm fascinated with zymurgy and I brew my own beer so I'll purchase anything beer making/distilling related just to say I've used it once (did you know you can distill alcohol with a table top water distiller?!?!?!).

Video Games: This more of a virtual collection, but I love playing old video games like Dig Dug, so I have somewhere around 5,000 original arcade games bootlegged on my computer (through MAME). These are exact copies of the ROM chips used way back when. You even have to simulate putting in a quarter with a keystroke on your keyboard.

Forget the name of it off hand, but it has Booker T, Otis, and Rufus Thomas on it. There's a genie lamp for the cover artwork. I think there's an oddball beatles rendition on it somewhere. I'll check when I get home. I spin it at least once a week along with Tighten Up Volume 2 from Trojan. It's weird how Soul and Reggae intertwine so well even though by the early 70s both were significantly different.

Some have been given to me by friends, like the one that was picked up from the bank of the river at the base of Machu Piccu.

Some people think I have rocks in my head, but I actually have that box of rocks that some folks are dumber than.

64. I'm starting to collect odd horse/livestock gear
I have some stuff from Turkey, Egypt, Mexico and old things from here.

By looking around the living room, I clearly collect Mata Ortiz pottery, even though when I go there I swear I am just a rancher and have no real interest in it.

69. history books
20th century history specifically. I am completely obsessed with how people deal with tyranny and oppression. My favorites are diaries and memoirs from people surviving (or not) the Nazis. Cold War espionage too, but I have lost interest in that.

I have decided to sell most of my collection though. I decided to be a book store a few weeks ago, and all but my most beloved books are for sale, which still leaves me over 200 WWII titles on my shelves. :)

If you are interested..... shameless plug for my new venture http://www.amazon.com/shops/normandybooks

74. no, not at all
Amazon makes it very easy (but they get their cut)Unfortunately, many people have had the same idea, so sales are slow, but I KNOW I am doing the right thing. Nothing has ever felt so right for me.

Thanks for the good wishes.... I need it! :)
