Congrats, MTV. You ruined Headbanger's Ball.
Idiots.

How happy was I, cheerfully clicking to the "new" Headbanger's Ball that was on tonight. Jesus, what shit.

I'd rate my "shocked" level at a 2 out of a possible 10. :eyes:

1. What happened?
I've never watched the new Headbangers Ball.

I'm guessing it sucked, with bs music being passed off as metal?

2. I remember the Headbanger's Ball from back in the 80s
That was basically the only place that many metal acts could get any air time. It was cool back then.

Who do they play now on the Headbanger's Ball?

3. MTV is still on the air?
I have not watched it regularly since the heyday of Martha Quinn. What a crush I had on her!

4. Headbanger's Ball pretty much always sucked.
Except the last half hour when they would play the real Metal bands.

5. Back then, they called hard rock metal, even though it wasn't.
I loved Headbanger's Ball back then because I was, and still am, a fan of hard rock. I agree that most of what they played--and most of what was called "metal"--wasn't metal. I wrote for a local rock magazine back then and it always bugged me the way the term "metal" had come to describe all music that was hard, and even some that wasn't--remember the term "pop metal"? (I did not like any of the poppy stuff, and I also never called hard rock "metal.")

7. Yes. That has always been my gripe.
It caused laypeople to associate my peers and I with posers like Bon Jovi and Poison. We did not appreciate it, at all. That sort of thing could get a person beat up back in the day.

8. I watched most of it, wasn't impressed
the only song that was somewhat...interesting was the Lizzy Borden song, can't recall the name of it, but it was...amusing.

Static X song was...standard, same old same old...

The Mastodon vid was okay, don't really care for the vocals, or the vocals of most of the bands they showed, I'm not much of a fan of growling death metal stuff...music is great, lead singer kills it for me.

11. I think a lot of old school metal fans are turned off by current bands' vocals
I think it works pretty good sometimes, but almost every new metal band out there has that screaming/growling sound. I'd like to hear some clear vocals from the new bands from time to time. The thing that bothers me about a lot of new metal is that it isn't very melodic. It's more about percussion, rhythm, and a groove. If you listen to the older bands you will hear a lot more melody.

12. agreed, and I do like some
satanic growling/lyrics aka Max Calavera/Corey Taylor for example, or the lead singer from Killswitch Engage(can't recall his name)...

I don't mind the thrashing/metal/beat, most of the time the band is kicking some ass, and the lead singer kicks in with "insert inaudible growling here"....

But I do admit, having some clear/lyrics would be a bonus...

I foolishly, bought Lamb of God, Bloodsimple, and Downthesun because a few of my buds thought they were good(online buds at that though, it was my fault, but I thought hey, give metal a chance again)...and I was dissapointed...but just the lead singer I had gripes with. I do love me some heavy music, don't get me wrong...:D

13. I think that too
One slow night at work we put on the Heavy Metal channel on Sirius and every lead singer sounded the same, and it was just for lack of a better term, loud. Nothing like Sabbath, Motorhead any of the old school metal bands.

9. I didn't see it.
My DVR recorded a repeat of last week's episode of That Metal Show.

Was Headbanger's Ball different this week than it was last week? Did they change formats or something?

10. I didn't notice much of a change
Queensryche was on there, talking about a video/or something like that, dealing with war and what not.

The only difference I noticed, it was over 2hrs long this time, and it was on earlier. Usually its on around 1am cst, and it last an hour....

14. Thanks for the warning.
It sounds like it is now an atrocity. I do NOT want to watch my beloved Headbanger's Ball turned into a neutered parody of itself. Nope. I'll pass, thanks. I'll remember the olden days when Hector was a pup and MTV actually played videos and good music.

Nowadays, pfft!
YOU KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN!!!
