For Midlo & other UConn grads: Kathy John's has closed
For 4 decades, Kathy John's ice cream shoppe had been a staple of Storrs, CT and UConn. They suddenly shut their doors this week.

Kathy John's, A Longtime UConn Favorite, Has Closed

By GRACE E. MERRITT | The Hartford Courant
March 28, 2009

STORRS — - The recent closure of Kathy John's, a regional landmark for 40 years near the University of Connecticut, has dismayed the countless locals who would drop in to the old-time ice cream parlor for sundaes, hamburgers and peanut butter cookies as big as your hand.

With a silhouette of a Victorian woman astride an old-fashioned bicycle on the wall out front and stained glass lamps, a player piano and a soda fountain inside, Kathy John's had old-fashioned ambience and remarkable staying power.

"They had a long and fabled history. A lot of generations of UConn students and their families stopped there on their on the way back to school for ice cream," said Roger Adams, director of the area's chamber of commerce.

Owner Kathleen Jones, of Columbia, declined to comment on why she closed the restaurant, which stands on Route 44 near the Four Corners intersection.

3. Another casualty of the Great Bush Recession
I hope they at least keep the sign hanging out there, or offer to sell it to somebody else.

2. They should have rented out space to Coach Calhoun to make calls to recruits
He spends more time on the phone than I do with Comcast

:grr:

Sorry to hear about the old time place closing down. That sucks.

4. Holy shit!!
That place has been around as someplace I've visited for my whole life... fries and ice cream, and a wicked neat collection of cool stuff to buy, and a whole room full of stamps.

:banghead:

5. I know, it's sad
I hope they can at least keep some of the iconic images.
