Is there such a thing as a programmable DVR for over the air TV?

I recently cut off my Directtv service to save money. I would like to record a few shows (news shows) while I am out. I don't want a TIVO because you have to pay a monthly fee for it. I would like something I could program like the old vcr's used to be. I don't want to mess with tapes and think it would be easier to use a dvr with a hard drive in it. Any ideas if they make them and where I could get one?

2. For around a hundred bucks you get get a USB TV adaptor

that allows you to view and tape over the air TV programs

3. I' m about 60 miles from the TV stations antenna.

I'm too far away for that to work. On the bright side of this is I only run my television about an hour a day due to the lack of interesting programing over the air.

4. Look into "Building a HTPC"

A Home Theater PC. They can do lots of things other than just being a DVR.
