Ipod touch, worth it or not?
Can't afford the monthly fee with iphone but from what I can tell the ipod touch has pretty much everything but the phone part. I'm thinking about buying myself a touch for my birtday. Anyone have one? What do you think of it?

1. My brother has one and it is pretty rad.
Only reason I opted for the Classic instead is because I needed lots of storage.

3. I just got one a month or so ago. It's nice. The apps are the big apeal for me.
My wife has a Palm and is jealous. The only thing that I would like to see changed is the battery life. It's fine for playing MP3s but if you play games, use the wifi or watch video it drains FAST. I would like to see better battery life even if it meant the unit were a little thicker to accommodate a larger battery.

Oh and of course Itunes is a nightmare but it's worth putting up with for the Touch. I wouldn't tolerate it for just a regular MP3 player (I won't own an Ipod because of it.) (IMO)

4. I got one about a month ago and love it
I mainly got it for the big screen (it has some movies and TV episodes on it) and haven't regretted getting it at all.

7. I JUST set mine up this weekend. LOVE it.
I already have a couple of Nanos that I also love.

Big advantage of the Touch: WiFi, if you need mobile web access. Anywhere you can log on to a network, you can surf. There's even a special app for the Touch called "Free WiFi" that'll use the GPS in the Touch to find the closest free WiFi network to wherever you are.

Other good things: intuitive interface, TONS of free and cheap apps (restaurant reviews that'll search wherever you are), the GPS function, and more stuff that I can't think of right this minute. :P

It'd make a nifty birthday gift to yourself, fo sho.

11. But don't you need WiFi to use the Free WiFi app?
Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose?

You can just go to Settings->Wi-Fi to see available Wi-Fi spots around you.

13. I imagine it's most useful to check on places you're going.
For example, if you're going to be in Denver on business, type in the zip code of wherever you'll be hanging out, and voila.

8. How much music do you have
I'd love to get a touch but until they get at least 80g capacity it's not worth it.

I have a 160g classic and already have 40g worth of music on it.

10. I have one, I like it, but it is an Apple product
Meaning that like any other modern product that you only sort of own it and are at best a manager rather than a controller of it.

I Love that I can WiFi podcasts, I'd like to be able to subscribe to them on the device. I am endlessly annoyed that I have to sync them to my computer to delete them.

Last week Apple pulled all the Emoji enabling apps from the app store, so the occasional swerve in policy and thus functionality must be expected.

That said I have several apps and have spent more for e-books than I have for any other media.

Also the touch v 1 like I have is short the phone AND the camera. I'd have to research the touch v 2, but I hear its gpu is much better.

20. one of the online ebook places is offering $100 discount on ipod if you sing up for their service
that made it all the more appealing for me. I've got an 80 g regular ipod that has my entire music library on it but the reality is that most of the time I only listen to a couple of different playlists. I don't want to give up having my whole library for trips and stuff but for every day running I think it would be great to have the stuff that the touch does. I think I'm going to go for it.

12. I love mine--bought it before traveling to a convention in Florida
Edited on Mon Mar-02-09 02:17 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
While it has lower storage capacity than the iPod Classic, it has huge advantages:

1. I can keep track of my e-mail without lugging a laptop around or looking for an Internet cafe. All I need is wi-fi. This is important in these days of airline baggage surcharges. I don't have to carry a purse AND a laptop case. I just carry a purse.

2. Watching an episode of The Sopranos or The Wire or whatever makes time spent on planes and in airports pass by almost unnoticed.

3. If you don't have time to watch a TV show, you can always play one of the many free downloadable games and listen to music at the same time.

4. I can listen to pieces that my choir will be performing in the near future. I find that hearing what a piece is supposed to sound like helps me sing better.

P.S. Ironically, I won an iPod Classic in a drawing at the convention, so now I use it to store my vast music collection (literally hundreds of CDs) and use the Touch mostly for video.

14. Love mine and I use it every day.
There are more and more places with free wifi and the apps don't need wifi to work. I use mine as the worlds best PDA. This thing is simply brilliant.

But make sure you have a wireless router. Then you will be able to do all kinds of things on-line and you will really get your money's worth.

16. Okay, everyone: this is my question about it.
Edited on Mon Mar-02-09 09:26 PM by pink-o
I have a Palm TX that I bought 3 years ago, and I'm reluctant to trade it in because it has a word processing program and a foldable keyboard that expands into full-sized.

Can you use an Ipod Touch to write documents? Does it have a keyboard accessory? If so, I might consider it.

Folded and compact for travel:

Expanded: writing the Great American Novel--or at least a few short stories!

21. There are more office type apps coming out all the time but I've been disapointed.
It's been hard to find any really good spreadsheet and word processing apps.

The Touch has the potential to be a world class business oriented PDA but most people see it as a toy and write software accordingly. Having said that I'll tell you that my wife has a palm like yours and says she is jealous of my Touch. We've never had any luck with that little keyboard. :P

25. That keyboard can be a bit tempermental!
I've set it up in cafes, ready to manifest my thoughts into verbage, only to get no response. Usually I can bang it about a bit and everything is kopacetic, but it can interrupt the flow a bit.

I have a vision of looking back in 10 years and laughing with our friends "Remember the days when we thought the Iphone was all that?" "Remember when your cell phone was actually external, instead of planted in your brain--and you used to lose the signal all the time?" "Remember when you were the fastest texter and twitterer in the neighborhood? Too bad those are obselete skills!"

Until November 4, the only thing I've really enjoyed about the 21st century is the cool techie toys. I'm a straight chick: I own 4 pairs of shoes (2 pairs are running shoes), no jewelry, and 6 Ipods!!! And evidence of my photographic skills in this thread notwithstanding, I'd rather play with Adobe photoshop that actually shop in a mall.

I musta gotten some Dude DNA in there somewhere!

19. I love mine.
The apps are great and I love the screen. I haven't missed the phone or camera part of the iPhone, yet...but sometimes I am tempted when I see my friends get on the internet without having to find a hotspot for wifi. But I'm not sure having to pay for the phone service is worth it for what I do with the iPod touch.

26. There are apps that let you import various types of documents and use the Touch as a storage device.
But since Itunes won't let you do it you need a wi-fi connection to get the documents to the Iphone / Touch. No Wi-fi, no dice...
