Something else about The West Wing that never worked for me...
I hated the Toby shuttle leak storyline. I hated what Jed said to Toby about Toby feeling like he was superior to him. The whole thing never worked for me. It didn't work for the character either. Toby wouldn't have betrayed the president like that.

I did like the idea of a Santos presidency and was really hoping for a spin-off though. Basically, I just wasn't ready for the show to end. :(

1. i thought it did fit in with Toby's character
It pissed Toby off to no end whenever he thought the president dropped the ball or missed an opportunity to do what he felt was the right thing. You're right in that Toby didn't think he was morally superior, but he desperately wanted to use his position to do great things. If he felt the president was holding back, he told him so. Jed, who has a big ego himself, took that to mean that Toby felt he was more superior. As for leaking the information about the shuttle, I don't think Toby would've done that before his brother committed suicide. I think that was the breaking point for him and he wasn't going to stand for Jed holding back, ESPECIALLY if it would lead to dead astronauts. In a way, Toby is the ONLY character it made sense to be the leaker.

2. I'm only sort of okay about everything that happened in the show after Aaron Sorkin left.
What made the show so astounding for its first four seasons were the characters, not the plot. After Sorkin was fired, and took his amazing writing with him, plot was all that was left. The characters started doing so many things that were OUT of character. Josh screaming at the Capitol Building:'You wanna piece of me?" That was just stupid. :eyes: Jed rejecting Leo, leading to Leo's heart attack. Making C.J. Chief of Staff instead of Josh. That was idiotic.

I wish Sorkin had been able to continue until the series finished. I watched Studio 60 for a while, hoping for a little of that Sorkin magic. But he just couldn't make me care for a sketch comedy show the way he did about a Presidential Administration.

I still hope he creates another show revolving around politics someday. Maybe something set at the U.N.

9. why was the West Wing so darkly lit?
it's like they were working in a perpetual brownout. :wtf:

i'm sure there was a point to that, like highlighting the action or the principals in each scene, but it was almost distractingly dark much of the time.

10. The NH continuity errors drove me nuts
First and foremost, there is no place called "CON-cord". That's an airliner from the 1970s. The city up here is "Kong-kuhd" or "KONG-kid".

Second, what the hell was the deal with the president having a farm in Manchester? Manchester is an industrial city of 115,000. We haven't had a farm around here since the end of WWII.

Third, there was an episode where the president was voting in a local millage election. No can do. If he lives in Manchester, tax rates are set by the Board of Aldermen (me and 13 other people), subject to approval by the NH Department of Revenue Administration.

Finally, the real Josiah Bartlett (a signer of the Declaration of Independence and ancestor of his fictional namesake) lived down the street from where I grew up. Couldn't little old Kingston get a cameo shot in one episode?
