Poll question: Dog Lovers. Do you like BIG dogs, or little ones?
Edited on Sun Mar-01-09 08:10 AM by Lil Missy
I like lap dogs. Like, they can fit into my lap.

I like BIG dogs too. And they like to be lap dogs too! They just don't fit! They are just bigger loveable babies. :D

1. Yes.
On second thought, though, my biggest dog is only 50 pounds, and the smallest is twelve, so maybe my taste does run slightly small.

9. If you are scared of being bitten,
you are afraid of the wrong ones. Little dogs have needle sharp teeth and can bite you twice as fast and twice as many times as a big dog. When I groomed dogs, the worst bites I ever got were from little dogs. The big dogs are slow and usually warn you first. The little dogs don't give you the luxury of a warning. They bite fast and lots too. :wow:

16. My little dog is like that. Friendly as hell, unless he feels theatened.
For one instance, he hates having his nails touched. I cannot clip them, he gets too hysterical. The first time I had the vet do it, he carried on so patheticallly that the people in the waiting room thought he got his legs sawed off.

:eyes:

Another time, I noticed a problem nail, and picked up his paw to get a look at it. He about bit my hand off! I knew, this is not normal, and there is something wrong. He would never bite me.

Got him into the vet the next day, and that nail was so infected they had to put him out for surgery to remove it, and part of his paw. He had to wear a cast for several weeks.

It was 4th of July week. I just thought he was upset about the fireworks. I was wrong.

always been pretty partial to big dogs, and would have a boxer if i could only have one. but i do love the enormous devotion of a good terrier. big dogs in little bodies. and you can have more of them at one time. i have 3 little ones, and i would need a bigger couch if they were all big. and a bigger bed.

11. My 20 pound dog almost got us both killed once. Going after a dog as big as a bear.
My little Terrier only challenges the big ones. He's a dumb fuck like that. This guy had his bear on a leash, my dog was inside the fence, his was outside.

I had to pull in my pooch and carry him into the house. That poor guy was pulling with all his might to keep his from jumping over the fence. My dog is an idiot.

He thinks starting a fight with that doberman who lives around the block would be a good idea. I think the little guys figure you can't risk looking like you're afraid to a larger dog.

53. With me, for some odd reason, it's visible to just about every
critter AND human kids. I even had a mourning dove follow me around when its wings were frozen. It somehow KNEW I would take it inside and thaw its wings out. It let me pet it and feed it right away and it let me take it out of the box to set it free the next morning too. Strangest thing I have ever seen. It just KNEW.

I don't know what it is, but kids just love me on sight and never stop. They simply MUST play peek a boo with me. I don't know of any other thing it could be. It's not a "get to know somebody" thing. It's a type of at-first-sight, instant type of "they just know."

It's gotta be some sort of neon (to animals and kids only) sign that says, "Sucker."

19. Don't matter. Ain't choosey
I take 'em as I find 'em. :-)

They've all been foundlings. They've ranged from 18lbs to 106lbs. Current one is the 106 pounder although, at 19yrs, she's down to about 90lbs.

If I had to choose one I'd probably get a big dog. I've always liked German Shepherds and grew up with one. I do like little and small dogs too however. Each is a delight in it's own way.

85. Do not ever get a Chihuahua if you don't like yappy dogs.
Edited on Mon Mar-02-09 12:45 PM by RebelOne
My son gave me a 6-week-old Chihuahua puppy for Mother's Day last year. His dog had just had a litter and I wanted one. Thought it would be good company for my Rottweiler because the rescue dog I adopted died in March and he was her buddy. Well, big mistake!!! Yap, yap, yap all day long. And my Rottie can't stand her. She won't bite the Chihuahua, but she just tolerates her. And the Rottie becomes terribly jealous when I show the Chihuahua too much attention. So I don't. Legend, my Rottie, 11-1/2 years old so I spoil her because she doesn't have too many more years left. The Chihuahua could live to be 15 or older, so there will be plenty of time to spoil her.

I grew up with big dogs...so they're all I've ever known. I feel safer with a large dog...it's a head thing.
Also, I sleep with my son's pit bull when I dog sit....he plows his snout under the blankets and hogs the bed.
He's not that big, but a big baby...a real whiner, can't even go to the bathroom without him whining at the door.
I'm being a whiner...I just want my own dog....

peace~

35. Never underestimate a 20 pound dog.
I didn't think my pooch had a mean bone in his body. But I had a contractor once that was so damned snarly and verbally abusive. And loud!

My pooch camped out on my feet constantly, and growled at him when he raised his voice at me. And sometimes my dog would jump in my lap when he was around. I've never seen my dog act like that. But he sure did not like this jerk, and was protecting his mama. The fucker was lucky he didn't get his leg bit off.

This is not a mean dog. He has always been treated well. Same dog that layed on my son's bed for days, depressed that he died and wasn't coming back.

55. Oh, it was just a sad story hooked up with a deaf Dalmatian.
My neighbor hooked up to my garage to make a place for this poor dog. A deaf Dalmatian.

He never gave this dog any attention. The dog would escape, and land in my yard sometimes. This dog would practically knock me over, because he was so appreciative of human contact and attention.

Why even have a dog if you have no interest to bathe, or fucking leave him alone, constantly?

He's gone now. He escaped, once again, and got squashed by a semi-truck. He was scraped up as road kill. Pisses me off.

32. both. Any. Have cats now, they're easier to care for if you have to
travel for a day or two ... and we sometimes have to take short work trips.

I grew up with BIG dogs - German shepherds, Labradors, a Great Dane / Irish Setter mix (probably the dumbest dog - sweet, but dumb - I've ever met), etc., but now I think I'd probably go with a smaller dog - maybe mid or small, so long as the small isn't a yappy one. Friends have a Pomeranian and a Rat Terrier and my god, the barking would drive me INSANE. German shepherds are so damn smart and can be really mellow unless they feel they have to protect you, then watch out!

Anyway - any dog I get will be a rescue or shelter dog - some wonderful mutt mix with a sweet face :)

60. :woohoo: Another Corgi-person here!
We have two: a red female and a tri-color male.

They are the best, smartest, most "human" dogs I have ever owned. We show them in agility and the male is a certified therapy dog.

I'll try to post a picture, if I can figure out where they are.

Currently we have a White German Shepherd and two small dogs (Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso). We'd like to get another WGS in the near future. fwiw, I grew up with all kinds of dogs. We had everything from a small terrier mix to a Great Dane.

70. Other. I've never picked a dog based on size, but if I did I would go for
a medium sized dog. My current doggie weighs about 30 lbs. and that seems to be a good size for me. She's big enough that she doesn't appear fragile, but I can easily control her when she's on a leash. I'm much more likely to choose a dog due to personality than for size or breed. I like friendly, happy dogs and mutts are my favorites.

75. I found the friendliest dog in the shelter when I adopted mine.
He was obviously an abandoned pup, and had not seen any care or good food since the day he was born.

I held him, and he was so scared and adopted me. I said I'll take this one. He even left some poop streaks on my shirt.

They would not let me take him. Gotta give the owners 3 days to claim him. What??? It was obvious he had no owners!!

I picked him up after the 3 days. Dumb fucks. I had appointments lined up. One for the groomer to shave that brillo shit off him, (due to lack of nutrition), and another to see the vet. He got treated for a few minor problems, and snipped. Also, some decent food. His coat has felt like velvet since then.

Now? He's spoiled so rotten he stinks.

83. After a pup leaves poop marks on your shirt, that is a bond that cannot be broken! LOL!
That was... what ... 15 years ago? He really has been a very good pooch, the whole time.

Expensive, sometimes! But the best and most tender hearted little beast.

Also spoiled so bad he smells like rotten eggs. :eyes:

I love BIG poochies. They are just bigger babies, and just as snuggly.

72. I'll take any dog who needs me.
But given a choice, I like big dogs. The dog who owns me now is only about 55 lbs, so she's medium. My sister, though, has a 110 lb King Shepard. She can put her front paws on my shoulder and be nearly at eye level with me, and I'm not a short person. But she's so snuggly! :D

77. We've had both.
Currently we have a pair of mini dachshunds but have also had golden retrievers. There's nothing like big dog hugs, but I love our little ones who climb into my lap and go to sleep. The little ones are definitely bigger babies but its hard to not let them have their way.

81. Other: both!
Right now I have big dogs, but I've had tiny lap dogs also, and I love them all. Advantages and disadvantages to both.

Some advantages of tiny dogs: You can take them almost anywhere, including an airplane cabin, if they'll ride quietly in a carrier. You don't need a huge tall fence to keep them contained; a smallish one will do. They don't eat much, and consequently result in less mess to clean up after. They don't take up as much space on your bed. They may do some destructive chewing as puppies, but simply can't eat your whole couch the way a big dog can.

Some advantages of big dogs: They can't slip between the tiny cracks in or under your fence, so you don't have to be obsessive about monitoring those. They keep you warmer as they take up all that space on your bed. Their size alone, regardless of personality, is a deterrant to those who might wish you harm. They tend not to be as noisy as smaller breeds. They are less likely to get stepped on or otherwise accidentally hurt by clumsy people or other animals.

I can't really say that I prefer one over the other; I just find myself living with one or the other in any given decade.

84. I love all dogs
but my lifestyle makes demands that make it nearly impossible (or at least, extremely irresponsible) for me to have any. :(

If I could, I probably would get a biggish dog - maybe a rescue greyhound, especially because I've heard they do well in city apartments.

Luckily my neighborhood has tons of dogs in it, and I am happy to play with any and all!

90. I'm a sucker for big dogs.
I like little ones, too, but I don't have quite the soft spot for them that I do for big dogs.

I grew up with an unusually huge black lab/mutt who followed me everywhere from the time I was one or two years old. He was a goof, and so loving. It has always seemed to me that big dogs are more affectionate, loving and tolerant of strangers than little ones, although that's not always the case.
