Hey all, need good vibes for my teenage nephew.
He's in fierce competion in Western NC to get into the Naval Academy. This would be excellent for him and his family have worked very hard to get him this close so far. He was 10 points off on his SAT so the board is wavering. Others with more points off have gotten in, and it would be great if they could give the okay for him. So prayers, good vibes and even suggestions at this time would help.

Thanks DUers!!

2. I passed through Annapolis once and stopped by the Naval Academy.
It was August, about 95 degrees with about the same level of humidity, and the cadets were out in the middle of the afternoon pushing themselves to the physical limits. It was unbelievable.

Good luck to him.

4. As someone who was accepted to the NA
I completely understand how hard it is to jump through all those hoops. I have never been laid so bare as I was during that time of my life. Tell your nephew I'm sending big time vibes his way. Does he have any letters of recommendation lined up from senators or the governor?

:fistbump:

6. Thanks. Yes, from the senator and a few others.
How did you like the academy? Did you go on to a career in the navy?

12. Never accepted.

When I was applying (it may be different now), you had to indicate three possible areas of instruction in which you wanted a degree. I wanted to become a mechanical engineer. Along with my acceptance letter was a notification that their tests indicated I would be best suited to be an electrical engineer.

Although that may sound like a minor issue, it was a pretty big one for me. I turned down the Academy, got a full four-year ride to another college, and got my BSME like I wanted. I have never regretted the choice, especially since I met my wife at college. :)

I hope he gets in. He wants to fly. His great-grandfather was a pilot during WWI.

14. I just wanted to be a navigator.
Turned out great. I think I would have been pretty unhappy as an EE. But who knows.

I hope your nephew's dreams of being a pilot are realized. I only wanted to be a navigator myself. I had an uncle, also accepted and enrolled at the NA who was a pilot, and he told me the navigators had the cushy jobs.

11. Jeebus. I wish you had said something earlier. I have a friend
who is currently working at the Pentagon that might have been able to help.

15. Oh...thanks for suggesting that.
I just found out today. I sort of know our senator but I live in California and don't think that would help. My sister said everything's been done expect pray. They'll find out on April 15. Seems to me there might be time to put in good words edgewise but I don't know. I guess there was a deadline and it's passed already.

I hope he can get in. He was going to go to some obscrue Christain college that wouldn't look good on a resume. At least it wasn't Bob Jones !!!

Cheers.
