1. I suspect there are people reading the threads, and people posting in them,

but not a lot of overlap between the two groups. I suspect the posters are madly typing whatever thoughts come to mind, with no time to see other comments.

I typically ignore them entirely - if I want to follow the event the thread will be a distraction, and if I want to read about the event later, the thread will be meaningless. (Except for sporting event threads - I can post/read during the replays)...
