My newest poem...To Balance On the Wind...
Up on a column of air
The gull does
A balancing act

The wind shifts
And rolls beneath him
He jockeys to stay aloft
His wings flutter and dip
As he rides

It’s the surging wind at the end of the day
We always get it here

The flags snap
The trees bend and sway
I hold my jacket closed
Against it.

The gull seems to pause
As he climbs against the sky

He’s balancing
Upon the wind

1. Wind surfing
I used to love wind surfing. I haven't done it in a long time.

5. Wow Peggy!
I usually refer to gulls as rats with wings, I may have to rethink that now, that is beautiful! :applause:

17. Gulls are not rats with wings.
Pigeons are.

15. Another classic from the inestimable Peggy!
Is it me, or do they keep getting better and better? Maybe you should think about sending a collection of your poems to a publisher. :D

You are really too kind...I hope this is good, but I can't really tell.

You know I did get two published, but the next ones I sent got rejected. So I have less confidence now than I did...

26. very nice
You can still tighten it up a little, maybe eliminate some of the "to" parts of it. I "jockeys" as a verb, it's strong and muscular. Excellent job.

I really do appreciate your very constructive criticism...

I plan to look it over some more, and tighten it up a bit more...

Editing is a very useful and often difficult task.

Thank you!

29. oh yeah editing sucks
It takes a thick skin to write and continue to grow because you have to constantly be critiqued. It's the nature of the beast. Keep working hard, you're doing well. Read lots of poetry too. Just reading top notch poetry makes you better because it rubs off on you.

35. Nice! I can just picture that gull.
I love watching seagulls. Sometimes we get them inland here in Portland, and it always makes me happy to hear their cries. I imagine I'm at the ocean. :loveya:

Yesterday I was listening to the Shin's "New Slang" and the line I was concentrating on was this one:

And if you'd 'a took to me like
A gull takes to the wind.
Well, I'd 'a jumped from my tree
And I'd a danced like the king of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well.

It became popular because it was on the soundtrack of "Garden State" ... a good movie if you haven't seen it.
