ESPN: Nice try, but Favre decision was a Jets fiasco
Edited on Wed Feb-11-09 01:26 PM by charlie and algernon
The New York Jets' Brett Favre experiment officially is over. With no shot at redemption in 2009, we permanently can label it an utter failure.

Favre's stay lasted about five months, but left so much wreckage strewn in its wake.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum's daring Aug. 6 trade not only set them back, but also made an AFC East rival more competitive.

Here are some of the consequences of the decision to bring Favre aboard:

-The Jets went 9-7, failing to make the playoffs despite committing $140 million to free agents such as Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Tony Richardson and Calvin Pace and trading for Kris Jenkins.

-Favre led the NFL with 22 interceptions and had a 79.3 second-half passer rating.

-He threw two touchdowns and nine interceptions in the final five games. The Jets were 1-4 in those games and needed a miracle defensive play to beat the Buffalo Bills.

it looks like ESPN's love affair with Favre is officially over.

2. He's one of the best quaterbacks in the history of the game
The reason his stats went down towards the end of the season was because he injured his throwing shoulder. Most quarterbacks would have taken themselves out, or coaches would have taken most quarterbacks out. In hindsight, was it wise for him to remain in? No, but he has a documented history of playing well while injured, so I didn't see qualms with him. Also, it's pretty funny to see all New Yorkers and Favre-haters ganging up on him now, but why did nobody say this shit when the team was 8-3?

3. In about one year Favre has really trashed his legacy.
Now, it is undeniable that he was a great QB, but this is the kind of PR mismanagement that could delay his entry into the hall of fame by years because instead of just thinking about great performance, there is the whole catastrophic end phase of his career that makes him seem foolish.
