Jazz aficionados: Need help finding more tunes like "Speak No Evil" and "Maiden Voyage"
I own most of the albums by Miles between "Round About Midnight" and "Star People," as well as Coltrane's "Blue Train," "Giant Steps," "My Favorite Things," "Coltrane's Sound," "The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings," "A Love Supreme: Deluxe Edition," "Meditations," "Ascension," and "The Classic Quartet: Complete Impulse Studio Recordings."

Other than later-day "fusion" music, that's my Jazz collection, with the addition of "Maiden Voyage" and "Speak No Evil."

I'm working my way through the Miles and Trane CDs...so far, I've pulled "Iris" and "Mood" from E.S.P....and it seems like what I'm looking for are the best albums by Miles, Coltrane and their sidemen from the 60s that are closest in spirit and tone to "Maiden Voyage" and "Speak No Evil."

The title tracks on each of those two albums, particularly...I need a lot more of THAT SOUND.

Your suggestions?

1. "Everybody Digs Bill Evans" by Bill Evans might fit.

3. Thanks...the horns aren't critical.
My interest begins with the piano, actually...my favorite part of Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" is the McCoy Tyner performance)/

5. Some suggestions...
Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 09:04 PM by MilesColtrane
Wayne Shorter:

"Footprints" off of "Miles Smiles"
"El Gaucho"

Miles Davis:

"Nardis" there's a good version on Bill Evans' "Explorations"

Bill Evans:

"Blue in Green" good when done with a medium tempo, straight-eighth note feel

Freddie Hubbard:

"Little Sunflower"
"Red Clay" these were both written later, but they retain the 60's Blue Note vibe

Joe Henderson:

"Recorda Me" also sometimes spelled, "Recordame"
"Blue Bossa"

Woody Shaw:

"Zoltan", and "The Moontrane"...both on a Larry Young album entitled "Unity"

You might dismiss some of these because of the tempo at which they were recorded. I think you'll find that playing them slower can bring them closer to a Maiden Voyage/Speak No Evil feel.
