FUCK. I need to buy health insurance somehow.
My company has laid off all but 5 of us over the last 2 months and this week they canceled the health insurance.

Now what the fuck do I do? JEEEEEEEZUZ. It just keeps getting better and better.

1. Find a new job.
there are of course individual plans available but they are pricey. Also, it sounds like your company might not be long for this world. Cancelling health insurance is kinda a last ditch effort to avoid total liquidation..:(

2. Okay, let's look at your options.
You can get another job if possible to replace the health insurance.

You can piggyback onto some other insurances that cater to folks like you. Check out the Guardian specifically. I'll see if I can find a list of health insurance providers DB in MI and send it to you. Then you might have more options.

Good luck.

3. Contact your state Department of Human Services
Many states have subsidized insurance plans available specifically for working people whose employers do not provide health insurance. You may qualify based on your job or income.

7. Give it a try-- you might be pleasantly suprised
I work in Human Services, and a lot of people don't realize that there are a lot of programs out there for people, not just medicaid. And given the state of the economy, we'll probably see an expansion in them too.

Good luck to you!

10. I got lucky, that's all. I chose to forgo a raise in return for paid family coverage.
Not really an option most people have.

Otherwise, we were screwed, frankly. Thousands of dollars a year I just didn't have

11. Get some catastrophic insurance....
Similar deal. Our COBRA was $2700/month -- what a joke. We went to www.ehealthinsurance.com and got catastrophic -- $236 a month. On paper, it doesn't sound bad, but I'm definitely looking both ways when crossing the street. In the meantime, we're applying for better insurance and he's looking for a job.
You may want to look into state programs -- the children at least may be able to get some coverage.
Good luck. How f**ed up is this?

12. It's pretty f**ked up. My wife seems to think we could get COBRA eventhough I'm still employed.
I'm going to check and see. I hope she's right. It sucks to pay so much more for the same coverage but
we gotta do what we gotta do...
