Yes, I've gone poll crazy tonight.

Could have gone to a much less deserving band.

What was your other?

11. I beg to differ.
Priest and Sabbath, and Maiden, for that matter, inspired the likes of Pantera and Testament. AC/DC, a band I love, is not in the same league. They just aren't. Different genre.

16. Maiden is metal.
Priest and Sabbath, not so much if AC/DC isn't. If the poll brings in any band, no matter how not metal, just because of inspiration, then why not The Rolling Stones? Or The Beatles? Or God forbid, Kiss.

21. Black Sabbath is the foundation metal. Priest is metal. AC/DC, while a great rock band, is not metal
They just aren't.

Have you ever given Sabbath or Priest a real listen?

AC/DC rocks in what they do, but it is not metal. It just isn't, man.

Sabbath is the genesis, imho.

Priest gave it a UK spin.

Maiden, well, what can you say about Maiden - they are metal.

And Pantera, and Lamb of God. Good Lord.

AC/DC, as good as they are, are not in the same league.

They just aren't.

23. Well, nice thing about polls
it's all about opinion. We obviously both like the same sort of music (I had a Kiss lunchbox in grade school, so I was pretty scary early on).

And I have given both Sabbath and Priest a real listen. I like some of what both play.

BUT, if we were to directly compare, say an album from 1979, a sort of defining album, Killing Machine v Highway To Hell...both are metal.

Maiden has always been metal. The music to the stage presence to fucking everything. I also always thought that Clint Barr (?) was a largely overlooked drummer for his work on "Number of the Beast".

80. Priest are metal. No joking around. In fact they are HEAVY metal
as opposed to some offshoot like speed metal, power metal, thrash metal etc.

I am going to give you big props for going with the orignal non-North American title for Hell Bent for Leather--by the way. Judas Priest's early stuff had an awful strong prog tinge though--especially Sin After Sin and superhuman Stained Class.

I know it is pretty superficial, but to me heavy metal almost always inviolves tremolo bar lead guitar work--on at least a susbstantial percent of the tunes. Before anybosy gets carried away, this was just something I noticed when I was about 15, and the more I thought about it, the more it seemed to hold true!

49. I don't use genre labels usually, but AC DC isn't too far away
from the other bands in sound IMO. Pretend Angus is wearing leather and studs instead of a schoolboy outfit, make Brian give the devil sign, take out a couple of good time saturday night songs and replace them with songs about the Spanish Inquisition or Elves and you've got a heavy metal band.

Fleetwood Mac was heavier than Black Sabbath in 1969. Their "Green Manalishi" is WAAAAAAAAY heavier than Priest's.

64. They got far more "metalized" on their last few CDs.
The industrial stuff like The Land of Rape and Honey and The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste are nowhere to be seen on their newer stuff...sadly. They still use samples better than anyone, but I wouldn't call them industrial anymore. But they have some majorly crushing riffs to enjoy now though. :)

70. Yeah, they went to hell (literally) around Psalm 69
I kind of wrote them off after that one. I'm not a big speed-metal fan, and most of the stuff post "Mind" reminds me of second-rate speed-metal. "Mind" was about as good as they got, IMHO.

Have you read Chris Connelly's autobio? It's fairly interesting, and not overly self-serving.

I'll have to check it out. I still listen to a lot of Pigface, and the one off Murder, Inc CD he did was very cool.

I still like what Ministry does (I even like their "bad" CDs, Filth Pig and Dark Side Of The Spoon), but Land and Taste are still my faves.

76. I quite liked the Murder, Inc. stuff
despite all the slagging it got. I'm a huge Killing Joke fan (and even huger fan of Geordie, their guitarist), so I suppose I'm a bit biased.

Land and Taste are related to a very cool time in my life (they came out my freshman and junior year of college, respectively), so they've always got a spot on my turntable.

86. Killing Joke is fantastic.
I've yet to find a term that describes them accurately. Hosannas was heavy as hell, but still never really felt like just metal. They were close to punk at the start, but weren't really punk either. They've done this their whole career, and have always been real hard to peg. And that's a very good thing to me. :)

89. They are indescribable.
I've been a fan since Night Time in the mid-80s. And their early stuff has shades of everything in it: punk, metal, funk, post-punk (like PiL), etc. Jaz once described them as the sound of the earth vomiting. Hard to argue with that.

I saw them on the Pandemonium tour in 1994, with Youth on bass. It was nothing short of amazing. I'm hoping to catch the reunited original line-up, if they ever get round my neck of the woods. :)

And Justice For All, aka Ride The Lightning Jr., was a sharp decline, and they got worse from there.

87. I tend to see them as sort of prog-metal
They're a lot different than most of the rest of late-80s metal for sure, and the fact that I like them in the first place is probably an argument for not-metal.

But I definitely hear aspects of metal in their sound, especially in the guitar.

92. Mm, I have to disagree.
I think all rock music can be classified as "on the punk track" or "on the metal track". What I mean is, either they have their roots in punk (Clash etc) or metal (Sabbath etc). I think Jane's Addiction is spawned more from punk. JMHO. :D

53. My vote goes to Mastodon
I'm not a huge metal fan, but "Blood Mountain" is pretty awesome.

check out a bar in L5P called El Myr.
The guys in Mastadon own it.

One of the best bands in any genre, period.

I just saw the cover art for the new Mastodon CD. Paul Ramano is an unreal artist.

63. Half of those I'd consider thrash before metal.
Testement, Megadeth, Metallica and Slayer we're the first wave of thrash in the early 80's. I see metal more as a Judas Priest, Maiden, Scorpions type of thing.

Of the other bands on your list I'd personally take Maiden. They epitomize metal to me. Sabbath has had a bigger influence though, so they'd be a good pick too.

No doubt about it,Iron Maiden set the record for many metal
bands who followed.

And Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast is one of the best
albums out there.:)

88. Slayer, no contest. Their next ballad will be their first.
Sabbath invented it, Slayer perfected it. Metallica sold out years ago and should not even be considered.

97. Faith No More
Do they count as metal? Sort of. I prefer them to all the listed bands, in any case.

Angel Dust is still the best rock/metal album of the 90's.
