A Willie Parker story (Steeler fans)

Willie grew up here in my hometown of Clinton NC. He was the star player when he played football in high school here. For some reason that nobody knows, Clinton has always played kick-ass football. Our town is a lot every other little farming town in NC. They have won several state championships in recent years and that is no small thing in a state where there are hundreds of small towns just like ours. Maybe it's in the water.Anyway, when Willie came along, he was a super running back and it was easy to see that he was going to to great things in football.
My wife was one of his teachers in his lower grades and assistant principal at the high school when he was in high school. She said he was a model student and everybody liked him. He worked hard in the classroom too. He had excellent grades. He accepted a full scholarship at UNC but he never got to play that much in college. He was disappointed and so was the whole town of Clinton. He mostly sat on the bench, “rode the pine” one of the “spare parts”. He sat out most games and to this day nobody really understood why. When he graduated, Pittsburgh gave him a chance. That was a very good thing for Pittsburgh. Well, you know the rest of the story. We always knew he was a champion, and he shows it almost every time he plays. Everybody in Clinton will be watching the Super Bowl on Sunday including the Clinton High School football team.
When the players are introduced on Sunday, each player will say his name and where they played football in college. Willie will give his name and when it’s time to say where he played football, he will say, “Clinton High School”!! Watch for it Then you might hear another little sound. It will be the cheering all the way from Clinton.
He surely is Clinton NC's “hometown hero”.
