So I'm filling out an application
To work at my dogs' kennel. They ask for a desired salary. What the hell am I supposed to put down?

I haven't worked in 11 years. I have no clue.

3. Write down "will discuss"
A good strategy is to say you'll work for dog buscuits and then negotiate up from there.

Wait, that's terrible advice. "Will discuss" is the standard I 'unno answer. Then, late in the interview ask them "How much does this position start at?"

Then, later, when they say "Yeah, right. If you don't like it lady, why don'tcha go get a job at the local steel plant? Oh, wait, those jobs have all moved to Indonesia! Ha-ha!" and start to laugh at you, then you start negotiating for more dog buscuits per week.

No, wait, that's terrible advice too. Why the hell do you ask me these things?

7. I would not put a number down.
I am sure they know what they want to offer. If you think what they offer is to low after they offered it, you can try to negotiate. Say "negotiable."

9. I agree
say negotiable. Do what research you can online about salaries. The first offer is usually a low-ball. You'll know what range you're in and can counter.

Good luck sweetie.

10. Thank you.
It looks like minimum wage in this area. I have to start somewhere.

14. Not "negotiable". Say "will discuss"
I used to teach this stuff for the Texas Employment Commission. Just writing "negotiable" looks wishy washy, and I imagine for most pet docs & kennels, entry level salaries are not very negotiable at all.
"Will discuss" comes off more proactive, like an invitation to have a discussion about it.

If someone's gonna feel awkward, it should be the potential employer; let them think offering too low a wage is an insult to a person with your talent and life-experiences. Remember, your goal is to go home with a very large pile of dog buscuits in your back seat...

(by which I mean the back seat of your car, of course).
