"To sir with love" question

When he walks into the classroom and there's what looks like a fireplace smoking, why does he call all the girls sluts and calls the thing disgusting?

2. It was never explaied in the movie,

but in the book one of the girls put a used sanitary napkin on/in the radiator.

4. Yep, I read it years ago.

From Wikipedia:

"To Sir, With Love is a 1959 autobiographical novel by E. R. Braithwaite set in the East End of London. The novel is based on true events concerned with Braithwaite taking up a teaching post in a school there. The novel was made into a film in 1967."

It was a pretty good book about the challenges he faced as a black man teaching working class London kids. In the book he also talked about his relationship (marriage? don't remember) with a white woman--one of the first books about the subject I ever read, and it's obviously stuck with me.
