I'm thinking of changing my user name to "Unless."
As in: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

What do you think?

1. The Lorax is our favorite house standard book.
I got it before I even read your explanation. It's wonderful :)

4. My dear Aristus...
Please don't...

So many of my friends here are now unrecognizable since they changed their usernames...

I don't get your reference, but still...

5. It's from the book "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss.
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 10:55 AM by Aristus
It was a pro-environmental protection story that Dr. Seuss wrote in 1971. The words in the OP were spoken by a character called The Once-ler, a greedy industrialist who pollutes the air and water of a beautiful country, and denudes it of the Truffula trees that are the land's most prominent feature, and are the main resource in the product he manufactures.

The Lorax is a kind of gnome who is a cross between Teddy Roosevelt and Al Gore who pleads with the Once-ler to end his destructive manufacturing process. The Once-ler ignores him, telling him that profits are the best things there are, and he has a right to make them at any cost. Finally, with the region a desolate, toxic wasteland, the Lorax flies off, leaving behind only a stone stele with the one word: unless. The Once-ler never understood what that meant until years later, when he was broke, and bitter, and alone. He tells a young visitor: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it's not." The reformed Once-ler gives to his visitor a seed. The very last seed of the Truffula trees, and begs him to plant it, and restore the land.

I can't read the story without choking up.

8. Yeah, but no time to work on them. I left for school just after five this morning.
I just got home at 9:30pm, and just now finished my homework. Tomorrow, class all day, then study all night and all weekend...

:hangover:
