I just recently learned my pup needs his anal glands "expressed". My vet said have the groomer do it as part of the regular grooming routine. She does not teach it to owners. Thank gawd, I don't want to know. I'd be missing fingers if I messed with his asshole.

39. It's a smell you'd never forget.

A word of advice from someone who worked for a dog groomer for 6 years and has the scars and the nightmares to this day to prove it: Try to be AS FAR AWAY FROM YOUR DOG AS POSSIBLE when they do it. If it's the thin type, it's goes EVERYWHERE and if it's the thick type, it'll make you :puke:

Either way, it stinks like nothing you've ever smelled before and always made this ex-groomer's assistant GLAD to wash the dog that had been skunked...just to get the anal gland smell out of my poor pitiful abused nose.

If that one certain Shi Tzu* wasn't biting me in the nose for the fun of it, I had to smell the horror of the rotten eggs smell of the dip, anal glands, or skunk spray. If I was my nose, I would have ran away and NEVER come back.


*That certain Shi Tzu bit me on the jaw one day. I was the ONLY ONE who would touch her. That was the day I had to listen to her owner stand there crying and begging me not to quit grooming her. No other groomer in the county would let her come back once they dealt with her attitude. I agreed to give her one last go on the condition that she wait to bring her in later in the afternoon, then let me do the grooming without putting her in the crate. That seemed to be her "set off" point. She hated the crate. It worked. She never bit me again. After that, she actually started liking me and I could actually get her to wag her tail.

So, like the old, blind, sweet (as long as you didn't crate him) cocker spaniel, she was never crated again before grooming. She was a special case.

There was also a Pekingese that went ape shit and slung water EVERYWHERE if anybody but me tried to wash him. That was another case of only Jama does this dog. Everybody else talked about what kind of horror he was. I couldn't believe it. I had told them how good he was. I had washed him since he was a puppy. He was always perfect with me, then I had to share him with the others after business picked up. Not for long though. He was alllll mine after he let them now in no uncertain terms he wanted ONLY ME to wash him.

I miss some of those special case dogs who liked me and no one else. Sometimes they even didn't seem to like their owners. There was one that bit even its owner, but never me. Animals like me, go figure. :shrug:

40. Well. I don't know whether to laugh, cry, or puke.

My pets all trust me, cept my pup will not allow ANYONE to touch his paws. Thus, I cannot trim his nails. The vet or groomer has to put a muzzle on him, and he gets this look on his face like, oh, now I'm fucked. LOL! They get the job done.

First time he got his nails trimmed at the vet, he carried on so much than people in the waiting room were upset. When we came out, this guy asked me, "is he gonna be okay??" I said, they only trimmed his toenails. He busted in half and said my gawd, we were all out here thinking they were sawing his legs off!! LOL!

I don't EVEN want to know about the anal glands. She said she does not teach that to owners, and groomers should do it. FINE WITH ME! I'm not gonna mess with his asshole. And if someone messed with mine, I'd bite your fucking hand off too!
