I'm from Ontario Canada,so the winters here are pretty cold.

12. It's now 30 degrees in Atlanta, but I don't care.

I grew up in Chicago, went to college in upstate NY (Cornell), went back to Chicago to work, got transferred to NYC and then DC, and finally settled (for now) in Atlanta with the Mouse, my wife for 15 years, and a born and raised Atlanta Buckhead girl.

Atlanta has lots of problems. A mediocre transit system, an overzealous police force (when we first moved here, I tried to street park our U-Haul truck and bumped into a car. I went home to get a pen and paper so I could write a note to put under the damaged car's wiper blades. Walking back to the scene of the "crime", I was arrested by a Fulton County cop who charged me with "hit and run". WHAT?? Nobody was hurt. You expect me to call 911 for a fender bender? No matter. I spent 2 days in a holding pen at the Fulton County jail, deservedly ranked as one of the worst, filthiest and disgusting lockups in the US.)

Sorry. I digressed. This thread is about the weather. Yeppers, it's chilly here in Atlanta, but I follow the weather in Chicago and Ithaca and say to myself, "Thank GOD I'm not there."

I have a brother and sister who live with their spouses and adult children in the Chicago area. We have Comcast cable (which sucks big time) which among it's few pluses carries WGN. I watch their local Chicago newscasts and thank God that I no longer live there.

It's interesting (at least for me) to note that the tradition of "marking" a street parking spot with a chair, trash can, or other such debris is alive and thriving, although technically illegal. I used to live on Chicago's NW side, Avondale, a mostly Polish neighborhood, a walk away from the Logan Square or Belmont/Kimball "L" stops. If you shoveled out your car from the curb space you put it in before the inevitable blizzard, and stuck a chair on it when you drove somewhere, nobody, and I mean NOBODY violated your space.

I've read that Boston drivers who street park do the same thing, and while it's technically illegal, NOBODY in Boston moves the chair to park in the spot somebody else shoveled out.

Do any other US cities have this unwritten street code?

15. I'll never forget riding with my dad in NYC

He drove a truck and was making a delivery.

A car was in a no parking zone where he needed to back into to get to the loading dock. The way it was he had to back so the car was in blind area so he couldn't safely back up for fear of hitting car.

A police officer walked up and offered to direct my dad into the spot.

Slowly..backing.. CRUNCH. Dad stopped and said something like "did I hit it?!" The cop was still doing the cmon'back hand signal and basically insisted he keep backing. CRUNCH...

When he got to the dock, dad stepped out, and looked to see what he hit. The trailer was on top of the trunk of the car with trailer tires smashed into the rear quarter panel. He looked at the cop like wtf. The cop was writing a ticket.

The cop casually went to the car under my dad's trailer and put the ticket on the windshield.

We unloaed the load and never heard anything more about it. :D

19. I can't top your story, but I can come close.

I lived in Manhattan for 10 years (1979-89) before my company transferred me to DC. For years after that, I'd drive to NYC to visit friends, lovers, Canal Street (really cheap fake Rolexes and M-80s that could turn a mailbox into shrapnel) and, early on Sunday morning, a stop at Zabar's (Broadway and 83rd, I think) for the best and cheapest lox, smoked sable, and coffee you can ONLY find in New York.

I always stayed at the Gramercy Park Hotel. It was gutted and renovated a few years ago; I think rooms go for $500 a night now. But before the makeover, you could get a room for $120 a night. It was a tad shabby, but not objectionable. Kind of like slipping into your favorite, well worn pair of shoes.

I was well aware of NYC's bizarre parking regulations. Alternate side of the street on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays... or is it Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays? And is it from 11am to 2pm, or 2pm to 5pm. Whatever. I knew the rules, read the signs, and always parked legally.

On one trip, I snagged a parking spot that I could see from the window of my hotel. Sunday morning, I woke up, looked out the window, and my car was GONE. So was every other car on that side of the street.

I stepped outside, saw two of New York's finest, and as politely as I could asked "Where's my car?" Very nonchalantly, one of the officers said it was probably towed for emergency street work, and I'd find it around the corner on Park Avenue South.

I walked around the corner, and there it was. Legally parked, no damage, and no ticket.

Only in New York, man. Only in New York.
