George and Pickles are sitting in the Oval Office for one last time, when the phone rings

Laura answers it, and for a moment the dull glaze in her eyes flickers under a barrage of desperate squawks from the receiver.

"Just a moment," the First Lady says. "I'll ask."

She puts down the phone and turns to the President. "It's Scooter," she explains. "He's begging you to pardon him right now."

The soon-to-be-former Chief Executive looks characteristically puzzled. "Well, shoot," he says. "What's the rush?"

"He's with the Press Corps," says Mrs. Bush. "They're really giving him a hard time about it."

"Tell him to ask somebody else," fumes the waning President. "I farted once in front of the whole damn U.N., and nobody pardoned me."
