Poll question: If you were forced into exile into a South American nation...
Edited on Wed Mar-03-04 07:35 PM by JohnLocke
Where would you go? I'd probably go to Argentina. But then again, they speak English in Guyana, and Columbia has plenty of drugs. :)

So, my choices would probably rank:
1) Argentina
2) Guyana
3) Boliva

So, in alphebetical order:

1. Please edit title to SOUTH American
Edited on Wed Mar-03-04 07:30 PM by JCCyC
Some of those are not "Latin" (Guyana = English), and Central America is also part of Latin America. Mexico too.

BTW, I voted Brazil -- less transportation costs.

Edit: lotsa typos & geographical clarity

I couldn't vote because the poll says I already did. It happens sometimes. Just a glitch I think.

Well, I still know people there and my way around.

I haven't seen that many pictures, just a few books involving them. Ever read "The Beak and the Finch"?

I've been twice, to help my dad with research on spiders and insects of the Galapagos. I guess things there have changed completely since I was last there in 1975, though... I don't think you can still swim with the sea lions and use the tortoises for camping stools.

New Yorkers respond to Falklands Island war -

"You's hear about the war in the Fawkin Islands?"

"What Fawkin Islands?"

Seriously though... I hear Argentina is nice. Plus I wanna go stand on a balcony and sing "Don't cry for me Argentina".

42. There was a lot of room for improvement. I was there the last time
in 1958. Overthrowing Allende really did throw it into the dark ages. Truthfully Allende was doing a lot of economic damage, not his fault really, but from his camp. He would have demcratically been voted out of office though if Kissinger and the CIA hadn't meddled. Will Americans ever learn? I think we really need to outlaw these right wing nuts so they can never get into power again. Look at what they have done in the ME. It will take decades to undo this.

43. I agree completely...
I was a freshman in college when Allende was massacred and I was horrified at what my country had done. As a senior, I chose the Allende administration as my senior honors project and did a 60 page paper on Chilean politics of the period. I know that things were not perfect during his administration and, certainly, Allende had many faults. The economy sucked. However, our government sabotaged the Chilean government and economy in an effort to destroy him simply because he was a self-proclaimed Marxist.

I agree with you that, had the US simply kept out, the Christian Democrats would have beaten Allende soundly in the next elections. What a horrible tragedy could have been averted.

Instead, President Allende "committed suicide by shooting himself in the back 17 times...."

the back with a machine gun. No matter the difference in the stories they all spell A-S-S-A-S-S-I-N-A-T-I-O-N.

48. Ecuador
Miles of unspoiled beaches. Some of the highest mountains in the world. Jungles. Volcanoes. Waterfalls. An incredible variety of flora and fauna. Cheap living. Relatively safe (although nowhere in South America are you truly safe). Friendly people. Historic districts. Aged haciendas. Hair-raising cliffside roads. Unusual fruits and foods.

I'm actually planning on spending half my time there after I retire. It's a pretty interesting little country, and only a 4 hour flight from Miami.
