Anybody else like Salted Licorice?
My father-in-law bought some salted black licorice (Dutch thingy) last time he visited. I became instantly addicted to them. Black licorice with a twist, but very yummy. I decided to buy some online but of course didn't remember the brand and searched around for the best deal. Ordered 6.6 lbs of Salted Licorice Squares. Let me tell you...there is a BIG difference in salted licorice. It arrives yesterday, I dig into it and just about fall to the floor. It was like sucking on a square of pure salt.....shiiiiver.

How disappointing.

2. You're telling me.
I bought it in bulk so it was MUCH cheaper. I'm glad I didn't buy the Double salted stuff, I'm pretty sure that woulda make me spew black licorice bits all over my white kitchen cabinets.

Hubby got quite a laugh outta it though, the rat bastard. Now I just gotta figure out what I can cook that I can slip some of the licorice in so HE can get his dose....bwaaaahahahaha.

4. Oh, dear. However, with the wonder that is Google, you probably can find
a nice Licorice Fetishists' Club on which to unload your 6.6 pounds of disappointment.

Seriously, I'm sorry this happened to you.

5. Funny.....but an intriguing idea.
I think I'll save it and put it out in candy dishes when we have to entertain the superintendant...he's a nice enough fellow, just never knows when to go home.

I think I found the right stuff now. It was in a coin shape (always stick with the shape at least, right?) and I found some lightly salted Mundrops (coins). Found it on the same site and I've got a 10% code to use there until the end of the month. I hope I don't have to figure out what to do with 13.2 lbs of disappointment.

7. Are you a teacher?????
I ask because my mom's a retired first-grade teacher, and that's the sort of thing she might do.

14. No sympathy for my hubby.
He's the frickin' sun and the moon as far as this town is concerned. He's also always on the front page of the paper cause he's done something goofy at school. For illustration: sitting on top of the school roof for the whole day dressed in overalls WITH a live chicken; being dressed as a sumo wrestler, pirate, elf, etc., etc. My favorite was the big picture of him getting his head SHAVED (that really was a fun one because I had spent the previous week convincing him that his head was indeed pointed and that he was gonna look like a conehead) He does these things when the kiddos meet certain goals, usually reading a certain amount of minutes. Being a principal at the elementary level rocks in my book.

17. I love principals and teachers.
But their superiors (school boards and superintendents) can sometimes make their lives difficult even (and maybe especially) when they're doing cool stuff to engage kids. That's what I meant with the sympathy thingy. Your husband sounds like a superb principal!

19. I'm very proud of him.
And the superintendent is a great guy...all of the mucky mucks are. They're just kinda long-winded. They've supported him 100% since day one and I think they're trying to persuade him to move towards the District Office but I think he's committed to staying at the school admin level. I hope so.

3. Did you buy DZ (Dubbel Zout)?
That's double salt. You kind of have to grow up eating that stuff.

6. Oh, hell no.
I read about that stuff. It sounds vile. Have you ever tried it? I can't even wrap my head around what that might taste like if it's saltier than this stuff.

9. I love DZ
The rest of my family eats the coins and the kokindjes. I love the DZ.
The diamond licorice is pretty mild and tasty.... https://www.licoriceinternational.com/productcart/pc/Diamond-Licorice-Zout-1-2-lb-4p33.htm

11. How salty IS the DZ?
So salty you could use it as a salt substitute while baking?LOL I'm giving these squares a chance. It appears that after eating 2 or 3 the tastebuds are sufficiently deadened that you can actually taste the licorice...LOL

I almost ordered those diamond ones, but I'm kinda leery of "moderately salted" right now. Think I'll go for something "lightly" salted.

13. It makes your mouth start watering like crazy.
Makes you make crazy faces.
For me...it makes me want to eat more. :) They go really well with King Peppermints too.

Stick with the coins for now. I do recommend the Kokindjes - very mild.

15. So you gotta work up to the salty stuff, eh?
How do the Kokindjes compare to the Muntdrops? I really like the Muntdrop coins.

12. You mean that awful "Double Zout" stuff?

That is the worst "candy" ever invented. Tastes like what a tire must taste like.

Nope, not the Double Salted stuff. There's just something evil about how it looks even.

20. We used to have Dutch neighbors and the kids were eating it all the time.
They gave me one whole roll of it and when I ate one piece and spit it out right away they all laughed. It's horrible. And one piece must contain a year's supply of sodium. Extremely bad for people with high blood pressure.

22. It's gotta be an acquired taste.
But like I always say about acquired tastes...I suppose I could acquire a taste for eating shit, but why bother? I'd rather just start out liking how something tastes from the get go...LOL

21. He had NO idea what kind it was.
He actually bought it here in Arizona at this little candy shop in Jerome. It was WAY expensive, something like 10 bucks a lb. He'd never tried it before either. In using the Google I'm pretty sure this is the right stuff.

http://candy-crate.stores.yahoo.net/trdrmocsali.html

That's a really good price but it looks like they're temporarily out of stock.

THIS is the stuff I have now (those little squares looked so innocuous):

but imported so understandable. Maybe if I ever go back down to Solvang, CA (little Dutch town) I can see if they have this stuff.

24. Hey...they're the cheapest I've found.
No way would I ever buy the stuff at a candy store. It was $10 a lb.

I'm really not a candy eater but I really loved the salted stuff I tried before. Now I just gotta find the right stuff and I'll be set for awhile. It's gonna take some time to eat that much licorice...LOL Especially cause hubby hates any kind of licorice.
