Why I hate Minnesota in January:
* Tonight: Windy. Heavy snow and blizzard conditions this evening will taper off late. Low -13F. Winds NNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 80%. About one inch of snow expected. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.
* Tomorrow: Bitterly cold. Mostly cloudy skies with a few snow showers later in the day. High -2F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 30%.
* Tomorrow night: Cloudy with snow. Low -6F. Winds S at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 90%. 2 to 4 inches of snow expected.
* Wednesday: Variable clouds and windy with scattered snow flurries and snow showers. Areas of blowing snow. Wind chills approaching -20F. High 3F. Winds NNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 60%.
* Thursday: Windy, snow showers possible. Highs in the low single digits and lows -16 to -20F.
* Friday: Mix of sun and clouds. Highs -9 to -13F and lows -12 to -16F.

The 5-day forecast. Note the temps are actual, and do not count the 30MPH winds expected. Ugh!!

2. I'm waaay too wimpy to survive those conditions.
We had an Arctic blast for a couple weeks in December and I hardly left the house. Even then I was cold (in spite of my five layers of clothing and the furnace blasting) because the stupid cold air would seep under the door.

3. It's a dry kind of cold in MN
The winters here are very dry, and the cold doesn't feel quite the same as that damp, bone-chilling cold you get in wetter climes.

I spent one winter in London (in the UK), and I found the winter there to be as cold (and at times colder) than the winters in Minnesota, even though it was at least 10 degrees warmer in London.

And once you get to 0°F, it doesn't feel much colder. -20°F feels just as cold.

5. Heh.
Mother Nature's making a serious attempt to kill you. Or so Garrison Keillor says. ;)

I believe it.

8. Funny you should say that!
Garrison Keillor used to live a couple blocks away from me. He moved out a few months back because a neighbor was expanding their carriage house to ridiculous extremes and thereby blocking Garrison's view.

And anybody who stays in this god-forsaken hellhole is clearly batshit insane. I've got paperwork to prove it, too. :D

4. You know what they say: "WINTER in Minnesota is the prettiest 9 months of the year!"
Of course, "they" in my experience have all been
retired Minnesotans who relocated to NC and Florida
after age 55.

Personally, that weather report sounds like a foretaste
of 'Viking HELL' to me.

Serious condolences on your geographic situation!

And I'm not sure which one is worse.

12. you think you've got it bad
we had it cold cold cold cold c o o o o o l d
then :

snow snow snow snow and SNOOOOOOOOOOOW (like, butt-height snow)

and now,
(of course!)

R A A A A A A A I I I I I NNNNNNNNN!
(mixed with snow of course)

Our town

where the sun don't NEVER shine

removes snow from the main roads
not the sidewalks
not the water drains in the intersections
not the side-streets from which you must start and stop often on a hill

Pedestrians aren't welcome here
and the bus drivers can't drive in the snow without getting stuck -- sooo ---

nor get me to work on time

It's SLUSHY
It's SLIPPERY and ICY
It's ANKLE DEEP PUDDLES OF WATER
and
Knee-deep snow along the sidewalks

which,

if you have to happen to have to cross the street

means leaping into snow about 3 1/2 feet deep

Hey, not a bad whine, eh?

13. Hey you wanna move to Texas?
I got a house for sale in Houston. For real.

It froze briefly one night in Houston a couple of weeks ago. That was the first hard freeze in Houston in SIX YEARS. Global warming I guess.

When I was growing up in Houston in the sixties, we had 3 or 4 hard freezes, where it got into the low 20s overnight, per year.

However, we spend six months out of the year indoors in the air conditioning, b/c it's too hot and humid to do anything outside.

14. *Shrug* -- hey, at least you'll see the other side of zero this week. Up in the Arrowhead, we'll be
below zero until Saturday. And then have -30 to -50 wind chills. Enjoy the warm!

15. I sympathize. I hate SC in June, July, August...... :-)

Wouldn't it be nice if one could have MN weather in the summer, and SC weather in the winter...in the same location?
