30. You would think that when Eric Clapton goes around telling anyone who will listen
that Prince is the best guitarists around, more people would give him credit.

Though to be fair, a ton of his music doesn't really feature his guitar playing, and his celebrity and eccentricity kinda overshadow his music anyway.

Back when he was still doing clubs in Minneapolis, the local metalheads would show up to his (non-rock) shows just to check out his guitar playing.

31. Oh, I give him credit.
But he never PLAYS. Dude should shred every now and then.

In fact, I'll coin the term right here: Shred for cred.

35. Yep...as Frank Zappa would say, "Shut Up & Play Your Guitar"
You Tube: Prince blowtorches the guitar solo in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with the assistance of Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, & George's son Dhani:

The Prince solo starts around the 3:30 mark...

4. Definitely.
Helluva guitarist. Matter of fact, the last concert I went to was the Purple Rain concert in Long Beach. 23 years ago? Something like that.

I really need to get out more often.

I've also played gigs at the same club he played at in Purple Rain (1st Avenue). The club is still around, too.

Overrated from the start, completely tasteless...

Mind you, without Prince we wouldn't have had this great parody of him:

More like a forest elf.

Can't believe he was the headliner at the Super Bowl a couple of years.

Pure genius, brilliant guitarist, brilliant musician and artist.

21. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
He seems to me to be so much unfulfilled potential, but that is all in terms of my musical tastes. Too many round edges and too few jagged ones.

Still, "Erotic City" was brill.

23. Great fucking guitarist, songwriter, musician, but anti-gay, sadly.
I can listen to his old music, but because of his stance against gay rights, I won't buy anything of his any more. :(

I still think Purple Rain was one of the best songs ever written though. I just wish he hadn't gone into this anti-gay thing recently. I liked him.

33. Brilliant artist.
A LOT of his later artistic potential was side tracked by his break with the established recording industry. Because he refused to give into their artistic limitations, he opted to produce his own music. This decision forced him to become more 'business man' and less 'artist'. As a result, his artistic focus was broken and we see a 'lapse' in his musical genius.

The truly sad thing is, he had more freedom to explore his artistry before he liberated himself in an effort to 'pursue his art'.
