Now I don't have them, and I'm in the same boat - considering a change between Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Dish & maybe just screwing it altogether and investing in a good outdoor antenna.
My question is what do you want for your media? What TV do you watch? How many TVs? Do you need a DVR? How about HD? What Internet access do you need? And yes, I'm going to throw in Phone into there too. Do you have a cell phone? What's most important? Price? Service? Do you need an absolute guaranteed 100% 911 service, or can you chance a Vonage-type service and cell phone combination as a backup?
There's way too many variances, packages and things to consider here, and I don't want to give you a simple basic recommendation without knowing a little more background.
If you're just having two TVs, want a reasonable selection of channels at a good price, and don't need HD but do want a DVR then $50/month plus taxes is what Dish is offering. Add HD for $10/month. This isn't the introductory price, it's the "regular price". DirecTV for the same two TVs, with DVR will do you for $45 a month for the first 12 months, going up to $67.98/month afterwards. Dish and DirecTV seem to require 24 month contracts, but you can get out of Dish's if you pay more upfront. Also the hardware for Dish and DirecTV are different; I like the idea of Dish Networks, because one box controls two TVs (so in essence you have a DVR on both TVs and if you set up recording of one show in one room you can watch it in the other.) If you want two DVRs with DirecTV, you'll need two boxes - more cost.
It's an awful lot of swings and roundabouts too.
Mark.
