Anyone have experience with mediation
in regards to the dissolution of marriage?

PM if you'd feel more comfortable. I'd like to be a bit more prepared. I'm blowing in the wind over here and totally on my own.

1. It is a viable alternative
However, you need to be prepared as to what you want the future to be like and to research and find a good mediator. Check this out for starts http://www.nolo.com/article.cfm/pg/1/objectId/E063755E-6E1C-4D01-82E7D8168510101A/catId/BD559BED-AE41-49FB-B7ABE481777B9376/118/246/248/ART/

2. I would seek a legal consultation first,
or at least be sure you know the divorce laws for your state.

Then - go for it with the mediation.

4. I agree
and there is place for a lawyer in the process if they are open to mediation. If your spouse balks on the process then it is best to have an attorney to protect your rights. Is marital counseling out of the question?

5. We looked into it, but after talking to one...
...we realized we actually didn't need one. My ex got a book from the library on our state's divorce laws. We had already divided up our things and worked out our own schedule with the kid.

If we had needed someone to help us work things out, I definitely would have gone the mediation route.

Oh, and this:
