Is Sundance really a place for indy films?
Or maybe that term has just lost it's meaning. Or maybe I didn't really know what that term meant within "The Industry". Now, I guess all the studios have their "indy" production companies that make movies. Reading this article made me wonder about it.

First the fact that HBO Films is screening their film and then the idea that the Marine Corp is screening one of their propaganda projects. Just doesn't seem very "independent" to me.

2. Is there a festival that has replaced Sundance?
I like the Lone Pine festival, which I don't think many have heard of, but that's more of a town's celebration of it's film history.

6. I've been to Lone Pine!
Not for the festival, my dad worked on the Owens Lake dust abatement project. The town was fascinating, and they had the biggest Chicken Fried Steak on earth.

3. having personally gone the sundance route...
sundance is the major studios version of independant. most of those films have several things in common 1)they have names attached 2) have over a 500K budget 3) not a single shot in the movie was done "guerrilla style".

That said...

Try Slamdance. It's held at the same time as sundance, just down the street in Park City.

Also there are several other smaller film festivals that take place in Park City but aren't nearly as big.

My info is about 5 years old so it may not be germaine to you.

But if you have any questions IM me and I'll give you what I do know.

5. The link isn't working.
While I realize Park City is not Salt Lake, it is still Utah! It is insidious, and most people never clue, but creativity is not allowed in Mormon country. This isn’t only my observation, but it takes certain knowledge to recognize this. There is art, but independent thought, any non-conformity is met with disapproval.

I think Redford fell in love with the landscape. I also think when a Republican is in the presidency, the zealots become emboldened.
