Poll question: Forget the great soda/pop/coke divide: there is a generational word gap to explore.
Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 02:57 PM by hedgehog
Surely you've seen the polls discussing whether carbonated beverages are soda or coke or pop. I happen to live on the soda side of the line that cuts through Rochester, New York. My folks live on the pop side. Recently I noticed a new word divide. For my husband and me, the soft paper product used to blow our noses when we have a cold is Kleenex regardless of the actual brand. For our kids, it's a tissue. I don't say tissue because to my ear it sounds pretentious.

So, is it a Kleenex or a tissue, and how old are you?

Eddited to add third choice

28. Make that a "grinder"
to go with that soda (from eastern Connecticut). Although grinder may now be generational, too.

49. A grinder is a hoagie or cheesesteak that is put in the oven for a bit to crisp the bread.
A grinder can be a hoagie but a hoagie can't be a grinder.

21. That should be kleenex with a lower case K
. . . if you're talking generic snot rag, capital K for the brand name. They've been kleenex as long as I can remember, back to 1960 (though the math doesn't work because in my head I swear I'm not over 23). Is there also a regional factor at play here? I'm originally from eastern IA (where soda is most often called pop).

23. Kleenex; I'm 43
And I grew up in Rochester. Didn't see the soda line, though. 'Round these parts it was all "pop" and no "soda". However, I learned to say "soda" after getting funny looks at my Catskill college.

I say Kleenex; my son has learned to say tissue in school. Whatev', as long as he wipes his nose!

36. East of Rochester it's soda, Rochester and points west it's pop.
If you really want to get picky, you should have heard my cousins from Youngstown laughing at how we said pop after living in Buffalo a few years!

52. A tissue ... 52.
I've notice other divides as well. For instance, my daughter says, "Do you want to go with?" And I'm waiting for her to finish ... as in, "Do you want to go with me?" Now her 7-year-old son is doing the same thing. Ack! And I heard it on TV not too long ago, so I know it's not just my kids.
