ugh.. i really can't wait to get out of Alabama
i'm one of 10%.

i was just going over the exit polls from the election in alabama out of curiosity, and came across a sad statistic. according to the NYTimes exit polls, only 10% of white voters in alabama said they voted for obama. white voters make up 65% of the vote in alabama.

*sigh*.. at least obama won in 'bama with my age bracket(18-29 year olds), though only by 1%.

3. Wow.
You are welcome and invited to all of the lovely blue states...but remember, the problems you see around you, are those which have created your love of Democracy. It's awful, but it serves the correct purpose.

4. there are certain things i love about alabama
Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 12:04 AM by Ava
and certain things i hate.. such as racism and bigotry.

it will always have fond memories for me and will always be home to people i love more than anything. it's a beautiful state, and has a certain laid-back mood that is appealing at times and also the "southern charm" and politeness that comes with most small southern towns.

however, there are plenty of things i dislike, and this is just another of those things. i have a love/hate relationship with my state it seems :(

5. Some of the most liberal people I know come from very red
states - you, and a good friend of mine who grew up for a while in Meridian, Mississippi. And my husband, who is from South Carolina. In his case, he was raised by awful bigots but he's always been the most open minded, liberal, kind and forgiving person I know.

Anyway, one of my favorite authors, Anne George, was from Alabama. She wrote the truly hilarious Southern Sisters mystery series set in Birmingham, and the author and her main characters were about as liberal as they come. 'bama cranks out some good ones, like you and Ms. George ;)

16. Helen Keller. She's even on their state quarter!

and, in some circles, particularly in Europe, she is better known as a pioneering socialist writer than as a person with a dsiability.

And who do we have on our quarter? A ruling monarch. :eyes:

10. If it helps. . .
"at least obama won in 'bama with my age bracket(18-29 year olds), though only by 1%."

The older age brackets will leave Alabama eventually, leaving your age bracket in charge. If everyone flees, only the freepers will be left.

12. Sounds like the Miami Cuban exile community.
All the old ones are off-the-boat, "Republicans are great because they'll bring down Castro/Democrats are evil because they sent back Elian" staunch thinkers.

The second generation is far less myopic, and far more liberal than the older generation.

Sorry, last Piggly-Wiggly reference. I promise.

Well, at least for a while, that is.

14. Don't forget that Montgomery Alabama was the first capitol of the Confederacy.
Before Virginia seceded from the Union and they moved the capitol to Richmond.

And then there are Bull Connor, George Wallace, Selma, and the Montgomery Alabama Bus Boycott.
Alabama competed with Mississippi as ground zero of Southern resistance to racial integration and civil rights.
