Five questions for dog companions.
Following up on the cat thread ( http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=8385370&mesg_id=8385370 ) here are five questions about dogs.

1. What's the most revolting thing that you've ever witnessed your dog eat?

2. What dog food do you buy? Why?

3. How often do you take your dog for walks on leash? Off leash?

4. What is/was the name of your all time favorite dog?

5. What's the longest time that you've lived without a dog in your household?

1. Okay
1. What's the most revolting thing that you've ever witnessed your dog eat?
Shit. Literally.

2. What dog food do you buy? Why?
Right now, my personal dog is on Nutro Large Breed Puppy. It's important during the growth phase of a large breed dog to be careful with food.

3. How often do you take your dog for walks on leash? Off leash?
Walks? Not yet. A great dane should have limited time on concrete during their first year. He has the run of the yard, though, whenever he wants.

4. What is/was the name of your all time favorite dog?
Don't have one. Zen was my baby, Dharma is my new boy.

5. What's the longest time that you've lived without a dog in your household?
6 years.

11. OK here's my answers
1. What's the most revolting thing that you've ever witnessed your dog eat?

Not my current dog but of course it is poo, followed by lizards.

2. What dog food do you buy? Why?

Believe it of not....Royal Canine Chihuahua kibbles but she wants wet food and I'm trying to wean her off of it.

3. How often do you take your dog for walks on leash? Off leash?

Leash and I've been bad in the last few days, (I have a dog door and she can go out anytime she wants. Today I was on my way and realized I locked myself out of the house. I finally got the bedroom window open and one of the little kids across the street was lifted into it and opened the door.

4. What is/was the name of your all time favorite dog?

I can't say I have a favorite dog but I had a dog named Dewy once and I loved that name.

5. What's the longest time that you've lived without a dog in your household? Several years in my 20's

1. What's the most revolting thing that you've ever witnessed your dog eat?

He doesn't really eat gross stuff--at least not that I have ever seen.

2. What dog food do you buy? Why?

Right now? Sadly, the cheap supermarket stuff. I supplement it with dog-appropriate human food, though. Next week he'll go back to his usual Nutro dog food.

3. How often do you take your dog for walks on leash? Off leash?

We don't go for "walks;" he gets time out on his generously-large run to romp, play, explore, bark, etc. The rest of the time, he is a strictly inside dog. His total time outside per day is probably less than 3 hours, cumulatively. We do occasionally go for visits to the park, or out to my folks' house, though, so he can run through the fenced-in field. It's about ten acres, so he has plenty of room to play.

4. What is/was the name of your all time favorite dog?

Toby :)

5. What's the longest time that you've lived without a dog in your household?

I never had a dog until I was a grown adult. I had a Rottweiler for a while when I was pregnant with OktoberKid, then lost him in a terrible situation that I still cry over sometimes. I didn't have another dog until Toby. We've had Toby since he was 9 weeks old, and he'll be four years old on April 18th of this year.

3. arf
bovine placenta

iams, better than store brand? They eat a fair amount of table scraps and all the dead shit they can find

They go whenever I ride and whenever anybody around here goes for a walk plus in the truck to work away from HQ, where they can wander around at will.

Jazz

6 or 7 years as a kid - Missy was there before I was born, got Taco in 5th grade. Then a year or so in college until I got Jazz. Many since her, down to 2 at the moment. All mutts of various kinds.

4. 1) You can guess;
2) Iams, for no particular reason, except she likes it and is healthy.

3) NEVER off leash. She's a Beagle, and when they go outside, their brains fall out of their nose. On leash: six or seven times a day.

4) Casey (current Beagle) is my favorite right now, of course. But I've had other magnificently memorable dogs, such as the immortal Patsy, the amazingly acrobatic dingbat Whirl, and the wonderful and late-lamented Beebee.

5) Two years. Two very, very long years. It took us some time to recover after we lost Beebee.

5. Here:
Poo. Not our current dogs, but Polly ate poo.

We're working that out.

Virtually never. If you take one dog somewhere, the other dogs freak out. They all go to the dog park about once a week, and we have a big back yard.

Favorite dog? I like all my dogs I have now.

5 years. We had a cat from 1991 to 1996, but no dogs.

8. Let's see
1. Cat litter treats

2. Nutro High Energy formula and Lamb & Rice small bites. Tris gets the high test because he was a bit underweight, and Molly likes the lamb and rice, which is a little lower in fat. Because her people are prone to portliness, we want to head off obesity.

3. On leash, at least 3 nights a week for at least 1/2 hour. On weekends they go to the unofficial off-leash park for ball throwing and socializing. Once it stays light until about 6:15, they go to the off-leash park every evening after I get home from work.

4. I can't choose.

5. I didn't have a dog from the time I went to college until Mr. Laurel and I shacked up, about 13 years. But I got to visit with my parents' dogs and with one or two friends' dogs as well.

9. I told Ollie he could read a magazine if he got bored
while I was out tonight. He thought I said "eat a magazine". Actually, I don't think he ate it. He just tore my alma mater magazine into a million pieces. Which is ok, I already read it.

I am trying different dog foods for him. He gets a mix of canned and dry food.

We spend about two hours outside every morning, sometimes more. He gets a walk in the woods and a visit to a dog park. Then he gets a walk before work and after work. On a weekend he gets more time than that.

Harry dog was my best boy and he died last Summer.

A few years during college and after college I did not have a dog. I need to have a dog to be in balance.

10. Okay
1. Dead crab on the beach. Couldn't get it away from her. Must have been the bestest evah!

2. Purina Proplan (I think) - because I care just enough...

3. On leash every morning. Down block to store whenever. Off leash at dogpark about five times a week, but I just sit there while she makes a big nuisance of herself with the other doggies. Shoulda seen her take on three St. Bernard's this afternoon - hilarious!

4. I was gonna give my childhood pet's name, but upon reflection I would have to say Cleopatra Marie has made it to #1.

5. 24 years. I was doing stuff...

13. Here are my answers, from a dog-owning non-dog-person.
1. His own poop. Which, once, he then barfed back up. Vomited poo.

2. Iams. It seems to work for our dogs.

3. On leash: At least once a day in the non-snowy months, less in snow. Our walk is a 20-minute trail through the woods. Off leash, we have at least one play session outside a day, all year around.

4. I've only had three, and two are still new.

5. Our old dog disappeared in November 2007, and we got two new dogs in September 2008. I did not grow up with dogs, and we got our old dog in September 1996.

14. Here we go
1. What's the most revolting thing that you've ever witnessed your dog eat?

Same as everybody else but we call them "poopsicles". (The dogs seem to like them best in the winter.)

2. What dog food do you buy? Why?

Right now we have Bella on Wellness Core dry and a 1/4 can of Artemis mixed in. She, starving street dog though she was, turns her nose up at plain dry food and will opt for the poopsicles instead - go figure. We're using the Wellness at the moment because she's shown allergies to store bought brands but we're not necessarily settled on Wellness yet either.

3. How often do you take your dog for walks on leash? Off leash?

We don't have a fenced in yard but it's 1.5 acres of mostly woods so she goes for "business" walks 4 or 5 times a day on a flex lead, "play/romp/sniff" walks 2 - 3 times a day (depends on the weather) on a 30 ft. lead and has a playdate with the neighbors Golden Retriever juvy 4 - 5 times a week also on the extended leads. We take her to the dog park most Saturday and Sunday mornings where she goes off leash and we're probably going to start her 2x/week at doggie day care to get her more socialized and exercised and give my at home husband a break.

4. What is/was the name of your all time favorite dog?

My yellow Lab Beau was my best friend for 14 years. He passed away this spring. It feels like losing half of me.

5. What's the longest time that you've lived without a dog in your household?

3.5 months. Between Beau's passing in May and Bella's arrival in August. I was born into a house with dogs and have never been without one until this summer. It was unbearable to me.

16. OK!
1. What's the most revolting thing that you've ever witnessed your dog eat?

Poo!

2. What dog food do you buy? Why?

Nature's Recipe Vennison and Nature's Recipe Vegetarian. My dog has skin allergies and can only eat certain foods, and I just like Nature's Recipe.

3. How often do you take your dog for walks on leash? Off leash?

They walk about 4 times a week on a leash. Never off. But we have a big back yard that they run freely in daily.

4. What is/was the name of your all time favorite dog?

That is hard. They are all favorites. But, I will say Lolly because she was my first dog of my very own.

5. What's the longest time that you've lived without a dog in your household?

I have never not had a dog.

17. I kinda wonder why you are asking? Problem?
1. What's the most revolting thing that you've ever witnessed your dog eat?

My dog would eat the cat shit. Totally fucking made me sick. Simple fix - I put the kitty litter boxes in the basement. The dog cannot navigate the basement steps, but my kitties can.

2. What dog food do you buy? Why?

I get him what the vet told me to get. Biggest problem is that my mother gives him a ton of crap that is not good for him.

3. How often do you take your dog for walks on leash? Off leash?

Couple times a week for a walk. And if I run an errand, he always goes with me. And, NEVER without a leash! He's a sneaky little asshole. He likes to "explore". That is fine, as long as I have him on a leash. But, he is deaf now. And I don't want to lose him. Especially over something stupid.

4. What is/was the name of your all time favorite dog?

Same dog.

5. What's the longest time that you've lived without a dog in your household?

My entire life, till I got this one.

21. I'm asking because
I know there are a lot of dog people in the lounge and I wanted to give them equal time after my cat thread.

I'm not a dog person, although I like visiting with other people's dogs.

18. I'm currently dogless, but
Our last dog ate regularly out of the cat box, and once found and ate part of the remains of a dead turkey. He rolled around in the rest.

He ate Beneful because it agreed with his stomach. He preferred to eat the cat food.

He went out for a walk every single night, on the leash for at least an hour. He also liked to be out in the yard as often as we would let him. We have a fenced yard, and he also had to be on a chain. He was a Basset, and he would follow his nose anywhere.

Our all-time favorite dog was our sainted Lab Brandy. She was the best dog I have ever met, and we had her for 11 of her 13 years.

I had never had a dog consistently (mom & dad picked up dogs from time to time, but always took them back) until we got Brandy in 1994. When she died, we got Flash (the Basset) from a rescue 3 months later. He was a senior dog and we only had him for not quite 3 years. He just died this Thanksgiving, and we are looking around for our next dog.

19. OK, here are my answers.
1. What's the most revolting thing that you've ever witnessed your dog eat?
I've never seen her eat gross things.

2. What dog food do you buy? Why?
Purina ProPlan. I've always fed Purina brands, she likes it and is thriving on it.

3. How often do you take your dog for walks on leash? Off leash?
Never off leash. On leash as weather permits (if it's cold, wet, or really hot I don't figure either of us would enjoy it). She has a fenced enclosure so the walks are for entertainment.

4. What is/was the name of your all time favorite dog?
I can't really pick a favorite. I've loved them all.

5. What's the longest time that you've lived without a dog in your household? About 1 1/2 years and I didn't like it. Something was missing.

2. Bil jac. because they seem to like it,and it's pretty healthy.. turns out they are kinda picky.

3. Every other day probably, always on leash.

4. Ringo.

5. 3 days when I had my floor refinished.

22. my answers:
1. another dog's vomit.
2. Purina One lamb and rice(kibble); readily available, and it doesn't make the one dog sick (many other brands do - he seems to have a food sensitivity of some sort.)
3. on leash- twice every day, a third time for the "puppy". off leash - never, it's just not safe to do that in this neighborhood, or with these dogs.
4. I don't really have one, I've loved all the dogs I ever knew well.
5. about 18 years - from the time I started college, until my kids were old enough and ready to live with a dog.
