And Columbus is the capital and the entire downtown was evacuated. The flight that crashed in PA was our airspace. Later that day, AirForce One was refueled by a tanker that flew over our house. Low and slow over the city on it's way to Wright Patterson AFB.

plane that had gone into the building. I called my dad to tell him to watch CNN. While I was on the phone with him the second plane hit. I knew right then it was terrorism but thought it was Palestinian in origin. Then it turned out it was al Qaeda. I remember seeing Yasser Araphat on the TV that night and he looked absolutely terrified. That was an awful day. And awful series of days.

I was in an American Studies course in college - a class on the evolution of the American public space. I'd gotten there a little early (it was an 8:30am class) and was talking to friends, when the prof came in saying he'd just heard the first tower had been hit - at that point we all thought it was a bizarre accident. Within 5 minutes he'd found a tv and we spent the class watching the news. It was surreal, especially because pretty quickly there started to be warnings that Philadelphia might also be a target.

Report it. I'm quite annoying about it.

As novelties? Sure. Not when I'm trying to sleep though.

We'd always drive by it whenever we'd go up to Baltimore, but I never stopped by. I think my parents went there after I moved away. Always looked like a lot of fun.

You should check out Christ Church in Calvert County every August or September. They always hold a big jousting tournament every year. One year they even had it on ESPN.

my sister was an actor for it awhile back, and I got in the habit of going every year.


It's actually really cool - and apparently the most historically accurate fair in North America (keeping in mind that it is still entertainment and not straight history, but they do make a real effort). They have one staged fight during the day, in the main ring. The rest is honest jousting, with no pre-arranged choreography.


I'll definitely check out the church tournament next year.

Not the ones that are grown on factory farms. Those ones are kind of sad and sexually repressed. They get poisoned with pesticides and thrown into trucks before they're ripe. But if you had a tangerine tree growing in your backyard, or in a community garden, where they were raised by happy people and allowed to fully ripen... those would be some sexy tangerines.
Okay, so first, you've got orange inside, and orange outside, but you've got this white layer between the two areas of orange. So if you leave it on, because that's where the vitamin C is, you peel off the husk, and you can see the orange through this paper-thin skin, and it's full of tangerine juice, but the white skin is perfectly dry. And if you peel it into segments, still not breaking the skin, you can see the seeds bumping up against the skin at the narrowest parts of the segments, which you can get out by pushing them through the white paper layer, and the paper breaks and tangerine juice spills like beads of water down silk, and when the seeds are out you bite the segment of the tangerine, but it doesn't just break once, it keeps getting crushed and each round, tear-shaped sub-segment breaks individually, sweeter than oranges, and sometimes, the tangerine isn't just the main segments. Sometimes there's a dent at the top, the size of the tip of your thumb, and in that dent, there's another tiny tangerine, a second round bead with its own chambers of translucent pulp...

I'm surprised that that's the part of my post you took notice of, though. I thought if you replied at all, it would be to yell at me for being a smartass about 9/11. I knew what you meant, though. A newspaper colleague and I were out there with a group of surfers, doing a story on surfing with sharks. Anyway, you can pull your car onto the beaches there, and all the radio stations suddenly went with the news. A whole beach of surfers and sunbathers, all crowded around the few cars on the beach, listening. Weird rumors started to crop up on the radio after the actual attacks. A truck bomb had gone off in front of the State Department. A suicide bomber near Congress. Nothing any of us could do, of course. After a while, we got our boards and went back in the water, out among the sharks and the waves, and surfed angry.
