Organic Chocolate Soymilk--their "Private Selection" store brand.

OMGSOGOODYUM.

I could seriously drink this stuff forever and to hell with real chocolate milk. I wish I could afford it more often. Even OktoberKid likes it. When I first gave it to him, he thought it was Ovaltine, not soy milk. And to think--this won't wreak havoc on my digestive system!

I don't know how I'd feel about the plain kind, but the chocolate kind definitely gets two thumbs up.

8. Nope, never heard of it. Is it like eggnog?
I love me some eggnog, but oh man, I regret it every time I have it, lol.

14. Yes, it is!
They usually only have it in the stores for the holiday so you might want to check to see if any is still left. I like it because I get the flavor of the eggnog without the richness that gives me heartburn.

2. For drinking/cereal, the vanilla is better than plain.
I just use plain for cooking.

BTW, if you have Grocery Outlet out there, they have soymilk really cheap most of the time.

4. Unfortunately not. We have three Krogers,
a couple of Shop N Saves, a couple of Giant Eagles, a Super Wal-Mart, and a Super K-mart. The Kroger store is the closest to us, so that's where we usually go.

I'll have to try the vanilla. OktoberKid would probably love it on his cereal. Is there such a thing as a sugar-free version? The chocolate has some cane sugar in it, but no HFCS, thank goodness.

6. Well, you can get unsweetened,
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 08:12 PM by LeftyMom
I don't know of any that use some kind of alternative sweetener.

They'll all have a little sugar naturally. I don't think you'll see any with HFCS, a lot of health food shops have a no HFCS policy (as well as no transfats, no fake colors and flavors, etc) so those things tend not to be used in stuff for that market.

I'm not really familiar with the product mix at any of those chains though, we don't have any of them here except for one SuperWalmart waaaaaaaaay out in the burbs. We used to have a Kroger variant out here (Ralph's) but they closed their NorCal stores.

edit: Chocolate almond milk is really good too.

5. I tolerate all dairy items fine except for milk.
Milk does terrible things to my guts, especially after my gallbladder removal surgery. I'm absolutely thrilled to find something I can drink that tastes really good, and isn't going to send me to the bathroom for hours afterward.

10. I don't like soy ...
I think because my mom is highly allergic to it, so I never had it as a child..as an adult, I find it,well not very tasty.

12. I haven't had much experience with it, but
I really do like the lighter texture and taste of this stuff. The best part is that I don't get "sticky mouth" after drinking it, like I do with real chocolate milk. I'm not sure what "soy" tastes like, but I'm not noticing anything unusual or weird about this stuff. It just tastes like thinner chocolate milk that's less sweet than usual.

13. I love the 8th Continent Light
Chocolate or vanilla has 80-90 calories a serving and the best mouth "feel." For cooking, I often use Better Than Milk powdered, which is very tasty, but watery thin. Almond Breeze is also great (yes, chocolate, too) for folks who don't think they like soy.

Sadly, I have a soy milk machine and can make my own, but I always seem to get a yen for tofu when I make it, so there's nothing left to drink.

15. I've been thinking about getting one of those, since I've switched over to soy milk entirely.
Do you like it? Do you use it? Do you think it's cheaper than buying soy milk in the store?

17. I use it all the time
It costs about 15¢ (not counting electricity) and 10-15 minutes to run a batch of soy milk (about 2 L) and about 3 batches of milk to make a good pound of tofu (fresh--nothing like it!), so yeah--it's a helluva lot cheaper than your store-bought. I probably paid for mine within the first 3 months because my daughter can down a liter of Edensoy (almost $3 a pop) in minutes. If you add a tiny bit of rice and oats to your beans, you get a thicker, sweeter, less beany milk, and a pinch of sea salt and sweetener of choice makes something comparable to what you buy in the store--except more fresh. Honestly, I go through so much tofu I haven't had the inclination to experiment, but you can make milk from almost any bean, grain, or nut. I also use leftover okara to add to the dog food and treats I make.

I got the mid-priced model and was really bummed when they came out with the filterless model right after, but looking at the video, I'm not sure it's worth the extra money because the clean-up on the filter cup looks like less of a hassle than having to strain the milk yourself. The extra pitcher to hold the drippy unit is a nice touch, though.

Having done the bit with a blender and boiling water years past (which always made a really beany-tasting milk), this is definitely light years better. There are other brands of machines and I think SoyJoy is the other one that gets good reviews. I seem to recall the cost was similar.

Thanks for the details. I'll have to check it out further. You said in your other post you make tofu with yours as well? Very interesting!

19. Yup, tofu
If you buy the kit, it comes with a tofu press/cheesecloth and a crapload of coagulator. It's one of those things that monopolizes your kitchen for an hour (bowls, strainers, drips, and such), but OMG, it's like I'd never tasted tofu before--totally different from stuff that's been sitting around the supermarket.

16. Soymilk and cowmilk are almost the same price here.
Definitely the price of milk has gone way up, and soy has stayed steady. Odd.
