10. Hey I've heard #100 and that one did NOT suck
that was the Obama song and personally it should be #1. The fact that Jann Wenner who is an asshole but also a raging liberal is the reason that song made the list. (He's an asshole for keeping prog-rock bands out of the Hall of Fame btw)

5. WTF -Kid Rock's lazy cut-and-paste desecration of Warren Zevon and LS makes the list
but R.E.M.'s kick-ass comeback single gets ignored.

also missing and infinitely better than 90% of the list- The Verve, The Cure, Ray Davies, The B-52s, Juliana Hatfield, Paul McCartney (who put out one of the best albums of his career this year) and Fleet Foxes

Jenny Lewis makes the cut way down, but they pick the title track (did they bother to listen to the album?), which, while good, was hardly the best thing on Acid Tongue

Pretty lousy selection of songs
Just when you think Jan Wenner couldn't be anymore pathetic...

#19--Yeah, it's not really the same band, but still not bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8shnOcVmZg

And you want good old-style rock?
#23--The Black Keys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5FW8Xo8ENo
#42--The Raconteurs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqSO8WeSz8U
#29--Pink: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bNDr1A6dTU

#48--John Mellencamp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTLDNcak67w

----

Grow a little. Be not proud of ignorance! Check out a few more. Yeah, a lot of them aren't meant to appeal to you, just as the music you liked didn't appeal to your parents. Some of it's darned good, anyway.

I've heard of a number of songs/artists on the list. In some ways, it's a very adult alternative and hip-hop playlist.

20. Yeah, well...
They do give a nod to popularity and profitability, and Beyonce has both. Face it, RS makes more money on a Beyonce cover than on The Black Keys.

And though she doesn't use it to the best of her artistic ability and far too often just takes the popular and profitable route, she really can sing. The song isn't bad. Number one is a stretch, but you know how industries work.

She's a great songwriter and a good singer, but overrated as a singer. I love hearing others do her songs more than her. Especially Emmylou Harris, who really gets her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0qYoT5dECM

19. The AC/DC entry is BOGUS
"Big Boi" is a rapper.

"Big JACK" is AC/DC's song.

The error is in Rolling Stone's Web Site...when you click through the correct title is posted, but in the list, they effed up.

Number 53: AC/DC's "Big Jack"

Did they accidentally mix up their best and worst lists? I've actually heard that song more than once, and it's a god-awful piece of crap. I'd rather listen to a recording of a constipated Kid Rock trying to take a dump than "Google Me".

40. Hey mvd
I enjoy discussing music with you as well... and, admittedly, I do find that song kind of catchy. I think the whole straight-girl-pretending-to-be-a-lesbian thing is more what bugs me about it. I was just kind of surprised to see it ranked as highly as it was, but, then again, there are a large number of songs on the list that I haven't heard, so I can't really compare them to it fairly!

Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 03:39 PM by mvd
It seems to have been written to be a hit and get people talking, like the record company needed that in an American pop star. "Ur So Gay" bothers me because of how the phrase is thrown around, but Madonna likes it, so maybe I'm missing something. "If You Can Afford Me" also seems gratuitous. I like her voice and the sound and the album overall, but because of the lyrics, the album could get no more than a weak honorable mention of 2008 (probably the weakest.) :hi:

I do doubt that Katy is a conservative, having rebelled against her Christian family.

how long it's been since I've listened to the radio--I have absolutely no idea who most of those people are. I feel like I should be wearing bermuda shorts hiked up to my nipples, a Hawaiian shirt, and sandals with black socks while yelling at those damned kids to get off my lawn!

45. I've only heard of about 10 of these artists, and only heard maybe
5 of the songs...
Dylan, of course is great. Just got introduced to "My Morning Jacket" this past weekend. Coldplay is pretty good.
I love the title of the Beck tune; "GammaRae" is what I blog under on Kos and a couple other sites *lol*
Guns 'n' Roses suck, always have, always will. Slash is a great guitar player, but Axl Rose's voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard.
Nice to see artists like Al Greene, Jackson Browne, and John Mellencamp still around and recording.

I would have thrown in a tune or two from Elbow; they're my favorite discovery of the past year so far.

Most of these artists I wouldn't know from Adam/Eve.
