Has anyone here tried absinthe before?
If so, how do you like it? Would you recommend it?

I'm thinking about buying a bottle. Any thoughts?

And yes, for those where were wondering if it's legal, it is.

and yes, if you like things like ouzo or pernaud (spelling?) - real herbal flavored - you will like it. The little preparation ceremony is nice too. In Turkey there is a similar drink called raki that also turns white when cold water is added.

10. No, it's ouzo that turns cloudy when you add water.
Raki doesn't. Raki is a hardcore spirit that you drink in shots. I think the name translates from greek as "fire water".

Never cared for ouzo until I went to Turkey and had the full experience of late night cigarette smoke filled rooms, lots of raki, saz music and the kind of conversations those conditions can engender.

Edit to add, they even call it lion's milk, because of that.

2. I think I have..... I don't remember for sure
I've had a lot of anisettes (the type of liquore that absinthe is), but can't remember exactly which ones.

I've certainly never bought a bottle of anything labeled "absinthe", because it all looks like it has some food colouring added to it or something, and seems driven by marketing hype. I'll just stick with a trusty bottle of Pernod (one of the original absinthes, though the recipe has changed slightly).

Anyway.... if you do buy some, let us know what kind and how you liked it.

6. I have
First of all, there are no 'trippy' effects. If you drink too much, you get drunk. I know - shocker.

Secondly, it tastes like shit. Imagine if milk had sex with licorice... The aborted fetus would be absinthe.

8. But I love milk and licorice.
:)

I knew there were no trippy effects from absinthe for years now. I knew it was just an excuse so conservatives could get it banned.

12. I don't think you can get real absinthe anymore
Not legally, anyway. There was an hysterical episode of Anthony Bourdain's show where he stayed in the room Oscar Wilde died in and managed to hook up with a guy who turned him on to the real deal. He totally understood then why the wallpaper was such a bummer. Best.Episode.Ever.

18. As of July last year, it's legal again
My buddy owns a bar and got his first shipment in August. They lifted the ban after they found wormwood is benign.

11. It made a friend of mine fucking weird though.
I was with him after he'd been out on the town and drinking absinthe. He was fucked up. He would kept changing his topic of conversation in the middles of sentences and confusing the fuck out of me.

13. Yeah, I know that now...
I was just stating my experience.

I'd have gone with a stronger statement to its' lack of hallucinogenic properties, but every time someone posts a thread like this...someone claims it made them trip their face off. I assume it to be the power of suggestion much like if you give each person in a group several non-alcoholic beers and don't tell them they're non-alcoholic 1 in 4 will act like they're drunk...and it's contagious. First one person acts drunk, then someone else does. Strangest thing I ever saw in psychology lab. Sober drunk people.

I didn't like the taste. If you like herbal liquors you might though.

15. I've tried it.
The taste was awful. I didn't "trip". It was kind of strong, though. But no hallucinations.

17. It's okay
The stuff I had was very licorice/anise flavored.

Are there any local restaurants that serve it? 'Cause there's a whole little ritual with spoons and sugar cubes ya gotta do.
